    As an intellectual property counsel at Aurora, you’ll help build one of the world’s great next generation companies. Your position will help manage and develop Aurora’s patent portfolio and other intellectual property, and will report to the Deputy General Counsel, Intellectual Property. Success in this position will require a keen understanding of intellectual property and technology, the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment, strong organizational skills, and a desire to rapidly learn and evolve.

    In this role, you will

    • Understand Aurora’s software technology stack at a deep level, and provide strategic advice to Aurora on IP-related issues concerning that technology
    • Work closely with product and software engineering teams to identify and protect patentable technologies
    • Build and manage a world-class patent portfolio
    • Advise on key issues related to trade secret protection, open source, and trademark
    • Evaluate and act on third-party patent matters, potential patent acquisitions, and licensing opportunities
    • Support business objectives related to partnerships and suppliers
    • Build positive relationships across the company and with its partners

     Required Qualifications

    • Law degree from an accredited law school
    • Admitted to practice and in good standing before a state bar and the USPTO (preferred)
    • A background in software engineering, with a good understanding of computer science
    • 4 years of experience as a practicing patent attorney
    • Experience drafting patent applications
    • Experience in strategic patent portfolio development
    • A proactive nature and "can-do" attitude; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with many new challenges; a good sense of humor; a keen aptitude for problem-solving
    • Proven ability to build solid, trusting and credible relationships
    • Excellent writing, communication, and people skills
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills
    • Sound business judgment with the ability to deliver practical, digestible advice to stakeholders

     Desirable Qualifications

    • Work experience as an engineer in automotive fields 
    • Experience with open source and/or trademarks
    • In-house legal department experience at a high-growth startup with incredible technology
    • Experience with IPFolio
    • Dazzled by self-driving cars

    The base salary range for this position is $157,000 - $251,000 per year.  Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
