Interface Designer - Web applies user-centered design principles to improve the workflow, expand the functionality, and enhance the visual appeal of websites and mobile apps. Gathers requirements from users and stakeholders, defines information architecture, creates sample user personas, and documents user workflow. Being an Interface Designer - Web designs wireframes, mockups, and prototypes. Applies the results from user research and usability testing to create new features and improve current features. Additionally, Interface Designer - Web requires knowledge of visual design and wireframing/prototyping tools. May perform user research, usability testing, or facilitate focus groups. May require familiarity with various graphic design software packages. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Interface Designer - Web occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     JOB GOAL:

    Develop, maintain and update standards and content for the district’s web-based and digital communications presence; design specialized layouts for the district’s website and digital media content and access; update content standards, and re-evaluate presentation effectiveness and access to ensure optimum performance and compliance with the district’s communications strategies and standards. The web designer is a specialized position within Marketing & Communications and Information Technology career ladders.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Associates degree in English, Journalism, or a similar discipline plus four years of experience in help desk, web and other digital media content editing and programming using HTML. Bachelors degree is preferred and may substitute for some experience
    • Specialized knowledge of the principles of and the techniques used for design, presentation, purpose and maintenance of websites that provide information and facilitate communications
    • Working knowledge of content management systems
    • Ability to operate various computer terminals, printers and peripheral equipment
    • Advanced knowledge of common website tools; especially those used by the district
    • Knowledge of alternative social media and other techniques for enhancing access (ie: ADA) and outreach to school district customers
    • Knowledge of web programming/scripting skills that include HTML FianlSite or equivalent
    • Understanding of web server administration, file system maintenance techniques and indexing and file conversion techniques
    • Strong writing, editing and grammar skills
    • Ability to consult and work cooperatively with a team; facilitate discussions, and conduct in-services with staff and others
    • Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate technical and complex information to non-technical users
    • Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals
    • Ability to maintain schedules and meet deadlines and perform all duties with minimal supervision

    Job Core Functions

    • Develop, analyze, modify and support the web-based applications
    • Analyze well-precedent yet technical problems and develop and apply appropriate solutions
    • Discuss technical information with users to discern their needs and develop programs, systems, screens, etc to meet those needs
    • Establish visual content and standards
    • Design and implement the interfaces through user-centered design principles
    • Plan, design, monitor and update the district website and digital communications presence for easy access, appealing flow, accuracy and uniformity in visual image, fonts, icons and layout
    • Prepare and communicate user specifications, display standards, content accuracy and templates or structures that guide web-based application development and assist users to update content
    • Consult with administration, departments and sites on techniques that assure access by users, including those requiring visual, physical, auditory and technical support
    • Write, update and maintain internet and intranet web pages that contain text, graphics, video content and digital links, which are accessed through the web site
    • Integrate the website with other digital and social media and subject matter links to enhance users’ ability to navigate the site
    • Provide support in updating dynamic database-driven features of the district’s website
    • Stay abreast of technology and emerging industry trends, and present new ideas, best practices and innovative solutions to improve overall web presence
    • Recommend web page and site options to enhance the look and feel for internal and outreach purposes, and integrate written and visual media onto web pages
    • Work with technology staff to develop web interfaces, and perform scripting and programming to enhance existing web site features and applications
    • Provide training and support to enhance the ability of staff to use the web portal and content management systems
    • Perform other duties relating to general job function as assigned by supervisor
