Human Resources Manager
Company Overview:
Sam Moore Furniture/HF Custom, a division of Hooker Furnishings Corporation, is currently recruiting a Human Resources Manager to work in our manufacturing plant in Bedford, VA. Hooker Furnishings Corporation, in its 100th year of business, is a designer, marketer and importer of case goods (wooden and metal furniture), leather furniture and fabric-upholstered furniture for the residential, hospitality and contract markets.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a driven Human Resource Manager who will have a passion for people, a knack for problem solving, and the ability to foster an environment where excellence thrives. This individual will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the Human Resource Team, overseeing administration of HR policies, procedures, and programs, and carrying out responsibilities in the following functional areas: recruitment & retention, employee relations, training and development, benefits, compensation, and performance management. This position will report to our VP of Human Resources and collaborate frequently with our company wide HR team.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with recruiting team to conduct onsite interviews and assist in important hiring decisions that will shape our future. You will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of attracting top-notch talent to our team.
- Conduct new hire employee orientations. You will be the friendly face that greets our new employees and makes them feel at home and excited to join the team.
- Guide new hires through the onboarding process and set up new employee records. You will be to go to person for all things related to our company benefits, policies, and resources. Whether it is explaining our healthcare options or recommending the best local lunch spot, you’ve got it covered.
- Forge a strong partnership with the plant manager, aligning HR initiatives with the operational goals and priorities of the plant. Together, you’ll develop strategies that maximize efficiency, productivity, and employee engagement.
- Cultivate an inclusive workplace culture, championing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to create an environment where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
- Proactively learn about emerging industry trends, advancements in HR methodologies, and technological innovations, leveraging insights to drive continuous enhancement and ensure alignment with legal compliance mandates.
- Mentor, guide, and support your team, consisting of a payroll administrator and an office administrator, ensuring they excel in their roles and contribute to the success of the overall team.
- Orchestrate employee recognition programs and plan employee engagement initiatives. You will be the driving force behind our vibrant workplace community.
- Organize local projects and initiatives that showcase our company values and make a positive impact in the communities where our employees live and work.
- Partner with supervisors to develop goals, implement measurement systems, and communicate performance expectations for employees. You’ll have the opportunity to ensure that every team member knows exactly what they’re working towards and why it matters.
- Interpret HR policies regarding employee discipline, absences, tardiness, etc., and guide both managers and employees through difficult conversations with empathy and compassion. You will ensure that every decision is made with fairness, transparency, and respect for all involved parties.
- Conduct exit interviews and handle out-processing records, including payroll. You believe every interaction is an opportunity for learning and improvement, including an employee’s exit from our company.
- As the back-up to our incentive payroll process, you’ll step in with confidence and precision to ensure payments are processed accurately and on time.
- Oversee and maintain a culture of compliance with all applicable employment laws and regulations including FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO and OSHA, unemployment and workers compensation claim handling. You will become the guardian of our commitment to equality, safety, and compliance.
- Work closely with VP of Human Resources and Administration to maintain consistency throughout the organization.

- 3-5 years of progressive HR experience that showcases your business acumen and adaptability.
- Ability to write and communicate clearly with audiences at all levels.
- Ability to handle complex and confidential matters with grace and professionalism.
- Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) experience.
- Bonus points if you’re PHR or SPHR certified (or on track to be) and have a college degree in business, HR, or a related field.
