    Responsibilities

    Practices family centered nursing according to policies and Nurse Practice Act; serves as charge nurse when assigned; supervises, plans, evaluates, and coordinates patient care provided by other licensed and non-licensed staff; demonstrates CPR according to American Heart Association standards; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to the hospital policies including confidentiality; serves as preceptor for new employees and nursing students; available in hospital within (30) minutes of call; The RN utilizes the Nursing process to: assess the patient; plan individual care; identify expected outcomes; implement and evaluate nursing interventions for patients and families; performs therapeutic procedures and assists with diagnostic procedures required for the care of the patient; administers medications including controlled substances by all routes; administers blood and blood products; responds appropriately to emergency patient situations; starts IV's, performs venipuncture for purpose of blood tests. Obtain blood samples from arterial access devices; performs activities of daily living; performs basic life support and management of arrest situations; requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care; when performing skilled procedures, the RN can state the purpose of blood test. Obtain blood samples from arterial access devices; utilizes proper body mechanics when: moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety; moving equipment that is necessary to perform essential functions; provides patient and family education by planning, coordinating and delegating, as appropriate, the educational needs of each patient; education documentation complete; utilizes a personal computer or terminal to access the Hospital Information system; communicates effectively and appropriately customer relations skills with Physicians, patients’ family and healthcare team; maintains accurate and complete records by: utilizing the correct documentation tools and procedures; ADP complete within unit time frame; how chart complete with signature; discharge forms complete; pain assessment tool complete; MAR complete; reconciles all Omnicell discrepancies; supervising evaluation and finalizing the patient care record; transcribing physicians orders; accepting and completing all duties positively and without conflict; cooperating; helping others and improving the performance of the unit; completing all mandatory unit educational and hospital requirements; utilizing cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations: Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adults, Geriatric; assists with and prepares tray instruments and catheters using sterile technique; maintains proficiency in airway management; monitors all physiological functions for recognition of cardiac arrhythmias, blood pressure, or other changes in vital signs, alerts physician and takes corrective action as needed under physician direction including administering electrical shock, emergency CPR, drugs, and other related treatments; performs Basic EKG interpretations; performs hemodynamic monitoring inclusive of arterial lines, flow directed catheters, central venous pressure, pulse oximetry; manages patients requiring mechanical ventilation and or patients with temporary and permanent cardiac pacemakers; performs emergency tracheostomy reinsertion; wears lead apron during procedures involving radiation; observes and follows radiological guidelines, precautions, and rules for safety; records and submits all patients’ charges relating to supplies, time in room and procedures performed; utilizes electronic medical records for documentation and patient charges; facilitates timeliness of procedures and schedules while communicating with physicians and staff; maintains procedure rooms including daily crash cart and defibrillator checks, stocking supplies and maintain equipment; assist with development of policies and procedures; participates in staff development programs mandatory staff meetings, education, and research projects; assist in mock codes maintains patient logs and gathers data for performance improvement and quality assurance; orients new staff and has the experience needed to be a resource for the staff; charge nurse and Board Runner as needed; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, licensure with the state of Alabama as a Registered Nurse, and ACLS certification within 6 months of employment
