Radiological Waste Health Physicist

  • Summary:

    To provide health physics (HP) support to assigned facilities, HP consultative advice to line and facility management, HP technical support, developing and implementing elements of the Radiation Protection Program Compliance Program.

    Duties may include but are not limited to:
    Providing HP/Radiation Safety (RS) program management and oversight:

    • Preparing, reviewing and revising radiation protection manual procedures.
    • Establishing, implementing and maintaining radiation protection performance models and metrics.
    • Monitoring RS related non-conformances and corrective actions.
    • Performing RS compliance inspections.
    • Preparing or participating in annual RS program compliance reviews.

    HP/RS services for assigned facilities and projects:

    • Development and implementation of RS controls, processes and procedures.
    • Project specific dose assessments.
    • ALARA assessment and reviews.
    • Preparation, review and/or approval of radiological work plans/procedures.
    • Post-work ALARA reviews.
    • Response and investigation of unplanned event investigations.

    Technical HP/RS services for assigned facilities and projects:

    • Review and approval of the selection and procurement of radiation and contamination measuring and monitoring equipment.
    • Oversight of site processes for the calibration of RP instrumentation.
    • In-field gamma spectroscopy.
    • Oversight of decontamination methods and techniques.
    • Planning, execution, and documentation of scoping, characterization, and release radiological surveys.

    Qualifications

    • Knowledge of recommendations and guidelines of radiological protection standards.
    • Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment, and techniques used both in theory and practice.
    • Use of Microsoft computer software, knowledge, and use of databases.
    • Knowledge in the use of modeling tools such as MicroShield, Skyshine, RESRAD, CAP88, Hotspot Scale, and MCNP.
    • Written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment.
    • Ability to multitask and prioritize work to meet objectives and targets.
    • Ability to make decisions based on established requirements, procedures, and practices.

    Education and/or Experience

    *

    Degree in Health Physics or Nuclear Engineering OR (B) Certified Health Physicist (CHP) OR (C) 3 years or more working functionally as a Health Physicist (not a rad tech) plus a science or engineering degree

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software and Microsoft Access.
