    Description

    Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Lactation Specialist to join our team!

     

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Provides support, encouragement, and education for breastfeeding Mothers and infants in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Performs specialized lactation assessment and charts appropriately to findings. Educates staff members with up to date evidence based education regarding infant feedings, lactation, formula, assistive devices…etc. Notifies appropriate care providers on abnormal assessments and concerns regarding the mother and infant, and can make appropriate suggestions to help maintain safety and a good outcome.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Actively promotes breastfeeding and assists mothers in reaching their own goals for breastfeeding.
    2. Provides direct patient care in labor delivery, postpartum, and inpatient setting.
    3. Performs specialized latch and breastfeeding assessment and evaluation.
    4. Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization where they might be served (OB/GYN, post-surgical, employee health)
    5. Supports programs that are already in place such as support groups and breastfeeding classes.
    6. Organizes information and posters for activities to promote breastfeeding.
    7. Plans, oversees and coordinates patient, family and staff breastfeeding education activities in coordination with the maternal child department.
    8. Communicates with providers regarding mother-infant abnormal assessment (problems with milk supply, abnormal infant findings, problems with infant weights, jaundice, SGA…..etc.).
    9. Implements a and maintains a reference library of breastfeeding materials appropriate for both health-care providers and mothers interest in learning more about lactation.
    10. Responsible for maintaining and updating files, in appropriate locations, of journal articles and obtaining references works including the latest information on lactation in a variety of contexts and circumstances.
    11. Provides antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum classes on breastfeeding, breast care and related topics to inpatients and / or outpatients in a group or 1 to 1 setting.
    12. Assess patient and family emotional, cognitive, and social And motivational status relative to learning and determines their educational needs and priorities.
    13. Adjust teaching plan to meet patient and family needs.
    14. Evaluates the effectiveness of patient and family education.
    15. Documents patient/ family education and progress of the mother and baby in accordance with hospital standards.
    16. Accepts consults for the education of patients and family members in the inpatient settings.
    17. Evaluates equipment related to breastfeeding and maintains the breastfeeding room.
    18. Supports hospital employees who are breastfeeding.
    19. Plans, oversees and coordinates annual and as needed education for staff which may include: care routines, policies, procedures and / or other aspects of the mother-baby hospital experience with involved clinical staff in order to highlight successes or needs of lactating mothers and their breastfeeding infants – responsible for coordinating staff competency activities and documentation of activities in staff education folders.
    20. Establishes and maintains a regular follow-up system of continuing care for mothers and their infants, first seen in the hospital. Patient contact may be made via phone calls, inpatient setting, and letters.
    21. Recognizes sub-optimal changes in status and symptoms that require follow-up and reports to physician
    22. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
    23. Completes required paperwork to document activities.
    24. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and functions under stressful and emergent situations.
    25. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
    26. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
    27. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Reevaluates plan of care as needed.
    28. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department, with other departments, and with other facilities.
    29. Written and computer documentation meet current standards and policies.
    30. Manages and operates all equipment on the perinatal unit safely and correctly. Immediately reports broken equipment per protocol.
    31. Implements consultations and referrals as needed.
    32. Demonstrates the ability to use the electronic medical record and hospital intranet.
    33. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, staff meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice in ongoing education. Attend staff meetings.
    34. Demonstrates the ability to use bridge and completes assigned modules.
    35. Demonstrates the ability to access the Policies and procedures on the hospital intranet.
    36. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
    37. Wears hospital identification while on duty.
    38. Reads emails weekly
    39. Follow established chain of command
    40. Meets requirements for quarterly bonuses.

    GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

    4. Completes assigned work, within the appropriate time frame.

    6. Interacts with other department and staff members in a manner which promotes optimum service to the patients and/or the public.
    7. Fosters good will among the staff members and community.
    8. Demonstrates willingness to perform tasks of a reasonable nature as directed by the supervisor.
    9. Upholds Mountain View Hospital confidentiality policy.
    10. Supports supervisors and adheres to hospital policies in a positive and constructive manner.
    11. Treats employee wages and salaries confidentially.
    12. Initiates action to prevent the occurrence of any potential problems or nonconformities relating to patient care or supporting activities.
    13. Initiates, recommends, or provides solutions through designated channels.
    14. Maintains competency through education, training, and in-service activities. Supports and attends on-going education on the unit.
    15. Promotes positive communication in the work environment.
    16. Does not gossip or cause contention among co-workers.
    17. Uses time clock effectively. Clocks in and out each shift. Requests PTO as desired.

    Qualifications


    QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must be a current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) ---- OR----- Candidate must have at least 1 year experience on a mother/ baby unit where breastfeeding education and assistance was provided and completed the “Certified Lactation Counselor” (CLC) program with certificate upon completion. Preferred that the CLC will continue their education to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
    Proof of completion of the following courses is required either at time of hire, or within the time frame designated:
    CPSI electronic medical record training. BLS Health care Provider Neonatal Resuscitation program within three (3) months of hire. ACLS within six (6) months of hire. STABLE within twelve (12) months of hire. PALS/PEARS within twelve (12) months of hire

     

    Experience: At least 1 year in a mother/ baby unit where breastfeeding education and assessments was provided.

     

    Equipment/Technology: Basic computer skills, able to use a variety of medical devices including, infant scale, vital sign machine, radiant warmer, respiratory equipment.

     

    Language/Communication: Excellent communication skills and leadership capability.

     

    Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations and able to calculate drug dosages.

     

    Mental Capabilities: Possess critical thinking and organizational skills. Prioritize patient care for safety and best optimal outcome. Able to define problems, collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

     

    Interpersonal: Able to work well with others. De-escalate volatile situations and offer and consider constructive instructions. Possess leadership abilities.

     

    Performance: Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
