Washtenaw Community College (WCC) is seeking a Part time Laboratory Assistant – Chemistry to assist with Chemistry credit courses. Needs may become available prior to or during each semester. Upon successful submission of your application, resume, and transcripts, you will be considered for teaching opportunities on a per course basis.
Position Summary:
This position assists in the upkeep and maintenance of the Physical Sciences Department chemistry laboratories and classrooms. This includes preparing all solutions and chemical reagents, and equipment needed for weekly lab sessions; as well as lab set-up/clean-up for approximately 44 course sections from Chemistry, Science and Environmental Science courses. In addition the laboratory technician oversees all inventory for chemicals, lab equipment, and supplies.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare chemicals and reagents for use in weekly labs.
- Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of the department’s laboratory equipment, classrooms, and core area.
- Provide assistance to Instructional Faculty members as needed.
- Prepare and breaks down various laboratory activities in accordance with the schedule.
- Observe labs to make sure all faculty and students have a safe working environment.
- Check throughout the week to resupply or refresh chemicals or any other lab equipment/supplies as needed.
- Handle all chemical waste consolidation using best practices that meet safety standards. This often involves heating/evaporating chemicals, crystallization, transfer, etc.
- Prepare labels for waste containers that list the various chemicals and coordinates pickup with Waste Management Services.
- Maintain accurate inventory of chemicals, equipment, and other lab supplies throughout the year for all disciplines in the department.
- Oversee all departmental lab deliveries in terms of opening and unpacking them, checking against requisitions, keeping track of what is/is not received, and what is broken or incorrect. This also includes overseeing any returns that need to be made and scheduling them as such with the Shipping and Receiving Department.
- Oversee collection and packaging of all broken glassware to arrange for appropriate disposal.
- Supervise all laboratories to make sure that all equipment, lab stations, and hoods are functioning properly. Submit maintenance request for repairs needed as they arise. Respond in a timely manner to issues that arise during laboratory sessions.
- Run miscellaneous errands to purchase nonchemical household items that are not regularly ordered such as red cabbage, batteries, fruit juice, electrical tape, etc.
- Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Hours/Schedule:
This is a part time position with a various schedule based on semester course offerings for up to 20 hours per week.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift and carry laboratory equipment as needed.
