Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments. Collects, prepares, and tests samples and records measurements or observations. Being a Laboratory Assistant prepares reports detailing results and conclusions, applications, and methodology. Conducts routine maintenance and safety checks on lab equipment to ensure working order. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Works in the Anatomic Pathology Department under the supervision of histotechnicians, cytotechnologists, and pathologists assisting with accessioning, department set up, equipment maintenance, monitors supply inventory, and other general duties. Prepares pathology specimens for send-out, and documents return of materials and reports. Works closely with pathology staff in monitoring service quality to ensure proper specimen collection, accessioning, reporting, billing of lab tests, and delivery of quality outcomes. Must be able to utilize good anatomic pathology terminology. Actively participates in lab compliance activities.
Demonstrates an overall knowledge and competency while performing tasks listed in the job description and all expected LTA duties. Accurately retrieves, registers, and accessions all specimens into Histopathology with appropriate record-keeping. Accurately organizes workload and prepares cassettes for grossing. Prepares Pathology specimens for send-out, and documents return of materials and reports. Prepares cytology specimens for review. Identifies issues and processes requiring improvement. Ability to find, organize and use resources to improve outcomes. Assists with maintaining organization and cleanliness and work/storage areas. Job duties will include specimen accessioning, performing routine equipment maintenance, inventory, stocking, and bench cleaning. Storage tracking/discard of samples.
Will consider students currently enrolled in an accredited laboratory science program.
Will consider associates and/or bachelor's degree graduates in chemistry or biological sciences.
