Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments.   • Position Description

    Cold Spring Harbor Lab is hiring an Assistant Supervisor. This person supervises the daily functions and activities of animal care staff in cooperation with senior level Supervisor staff. Assists in the operations of assigned areas of the animal facility or supervises all animal care aspects of a smaller facility. Plans and schedules the feeding and care of a variety of animals, organizes and plans technical procedures.

    The incumbent in this position will be responsible for assisting the facility supervisor in day to day management of the assigned animal facility, including training of research and animal care staff, maintaining associated documentation, checking and submitting various reports, maintaining animal and supply inventories, etc. The assistant supervisor will also be responsible for performing all supervisory duties in the absence of the supervisor.

    Position Responsibilities

    • Must show proficiency and be available to perform all duties described for the Animal Caretaker, Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician, Laboratory Animal Technician and Laboratory Animal Technologist.
    • Oversees activities of laboratory animal technicians, maintains and insures facilities, supplies and equipment, meet compliance of standard and regulatory requirements, troubleshoot and implement research procedures and protocols, adhere to animal care guidelines and assist in training staff with laboratory animal care and facility operations procedures.
    • Training of investigators and their staff in basic handling techniques, anesthesia, animal restraint, sample collection, administration of experimental drugs, and other procedures as requested.
    • Assisting investigators and research personnel with special requests, training personnel, assisting the facility manager and documentation of compliance to Federal, State, and Local and AAALAC guidelines.
    • Provide husbandry care to laboratory animals, rodent breeding colony maintenance, animal health and environmental monitoring and technical assistance to research personnel.
    • Assists in the supervision of work activities of subordinates. Develops plans and schedules the care and feeding programs for animals.
    • Inspects animal rooms for sanitation, proper operation of mechanical equipment and condition of the cages; ensures compliance with federal and departmental guidelines.
    • Checks health of animals, notifies investigators, supervisor and/or vet staff of health issues, and administers medications as prescribed.
    • Checks health conditions of animals and administers medication as prescribed.
    • Assists in departmental planning of goals and objectives and assists in developing policies and procedures for animal use.
    • Oversees duties of the animal care program (Flooded cages, completed treatments, post-op checks, water dep, food dep, weanings, gel cups, correct census counts, animal room logs, , breeding, technical services, etc.).
    • Provide orientations for investigative staff.
    • Understand and ensure staff follows SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards.
    • Perform animal husbandry or cage washing duties as needed.
      • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
      • Oversees cage wash operation, record keeping for the animal care program (animal room ogs, census, breeding, technical services, etc.).
      • Conducts facility inspections and assist in managing the quality assurance program in the animal facilities.
      • Determines needs and makes recommendations for staffing and new/replacement equipment and/or services.
      • Assists in ensuring facility and equipment maintenance is meeting operational standards.
      • Assists faculty and investigators to determine project requirements for animal resources, housing and care.
      • Assist in maintaining compliance for accreditation of animal care program (ARC SOPs, IACUC policy, the Guide, AWA, NIH guidelines, USDA, CDC, PHS policy, etc.).
      • Assists in the disciplinary actions for animal care and husbandry staff.
      • Provides backup oversight of the facility in the absence of the Supervisor.
      • Develops and/or participates in an animal care training program for researchers, staff and students; prepares and presents related material.
      • Prepares and/or maintains various reports and files.
      • Occasional Weekend/holiday required.
    Position Requirements

    EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or related field AND three years experience in a research setting; AND American Association of Laboratory Animal Science certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician OR,

    Associate's degree in Animal Science or related field AND five years experience in the care and feeding of animals AND LATG certification OR,

    Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by the director.

    EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years of work experience

    OTHER: LATG preferred

    KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB:

    Demonstrate written and oral communication skills and ability to initiate correspondence to investigators and produce accurate records.

    Working knowledge of medical/research terminology.

    Demonstrate ability to work both independently and in a team oriented environment.

    Ability to organize effective record keeping and computer utilizing software including word processing, spreadsheets and database operations.

    Knowledge of USDA, New York State, AAALAC and PHS policies and procedures.

    Familiar with the rules and regulations as outline in "The Guide".

    Knowledge of methods and medical techniques in handling small animals.

    Ability to effectively communicate is essential.
