Histology Laboratory Assistant
Brief description Pathology Laboratory Assistant position consists of assisting and preparation of the gross processing for surgical specimens. Inputting data into the laboratory information system. Preparation and processing of specimens for referrals. Communicating with referring providers and laboratory staff. Performing general maintenance around the laboratory. Assist in the tissue processing of patient samples received in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
· Ensure accuracy of samples received in the histology department.
· Pre-sorting, scanning, tracking, and routing of samples in the histology department.
· Enters test requisition data into laboratory information system creating an accessioning record which includes patient demographics, physician data, and test requests.
· Verify the accuracy of data before it is entered into the laboratory information system.
· Properly monitor the record of all testing performed during the shift.
· Communicating with clients, pathologists, and laboratory staff.
· Maintain inventory and supplies.
· Organizing and filing of all slides after sign-out.
· Perform embedding for processed tissue samples.
· Perform H&E and special stain processes.
· Perform coverslipping of stained slides.
· Clean, sterilize, and organize all workstations as needed.
· Performs maintenance of all histology equipment when needed.
· Perform laboratory’s quality control procedures.
· Performs all other duties assigned by the manager of the laboratory.
Requirements
· Associate or bachelor’sdegree preferred, High School Diploma or equivalent required.
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
· Experience working in the health care environment preferred.
· Requires knowledge of grammar and medical terminology.
· Accurate typing skills.
· Excellent organizational and communication skills.
· The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
· Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable.
