POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager, obtains and prepares specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests. The lab assistant reports to the lab supervisor and maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, families, medical staff, and interdepartmental and intradepartmental personnel. Will learn to perform various moderate complexity testing and maintain proficiency. Must be willing to rotate schedules.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine for laboratory testing for out-patients.
2. Performs waived screening tests and moderate complexity testing reporting results as necessary.
3. Accessions and processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
4. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
5. Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.
6. May be assigned to assist in training phlebotomy.
7. Performs waived and moderate complexity testing under lab supervision.
8. Reports all critical values to appropriate location/staff.
9. Maintains all proficiencies and competencies assigned by laboratory supervision.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by laboratory supervision.

Qualifications

Regulatory Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification as a medical technician preferred.
