Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments. Collects, prepares, and tests samples and records measurements or observations. Being a Laboratory Assistant prepares reports detailing results and conclusions, applications, and methodology. Conducts routine maintenance and safety checks on lab equipment to ensure working order. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Laboratory Assistant work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Laboratory Assistant typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. This position is responsible for the accurate entry of donor and draw information as well as the selection of the appropriate component plan. This position is also responsible for the precise execution of multiple production steps to produce quality components.
This position reports to the Laboratory Supervisors or others as designated.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Enter and update donor registration and draw information into the computer.• Process blood components from whole blood and apheresis donations with proper technique and documentation according to the procedures of the Rhode Island Blood Center Laboratory. • Label all blood components including proper checking and documentation according to the procedures of the Rhode Island Blood Center Laboratory.• Perform and document quality control procedures on a regular schedule. • Recognize equipment malfunctions and evaluate need for adjustment for repairs. Notify Supervisor in writing of any equipment malfunctions or unacceptable component results, as established for each quality control procedure.• Organize, process, modify and sterile dock any component as necessary to efficiently deliver quality pooled or split products.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Generate daily reports as required.• Read and follow official communications via policy memos and Laboratory Log Book.• Read and have familiarity with pertinent sections of the Rhode Island Blood Center Laboratory Procedures Manual and Standard Operating Procedures.• Maintain a clean and orderly working environment.• Preparation of biohazardous waste for shipment, (some lifting included)• Carry out all procedures in a reasonable time frame as determined by supervisory personnel.

Schedule:
2nd shift
Start time between hours of 3pm-5pm and end time between hours of 11:30pm-1:30am with every other weekend 11 am-7:30 pm and a holiday rotation.
The proposed hourly wage for this position is $17.91/hour.
