Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager.     Essential Functions:
    • Enters orders and other information into HIS/LIS computer system.
    • Prepares Histology/Surgical specimens for transport to pathology
    • Answers incoming calls on multi-line phone system
    • Faxes lab results to various places multiple times per day
    • Schedules appointments for drug screens and glucose tolerance tests
    • Screens visitors and phone calls and routes them to the correct person.
    • Greets escorts and gives routing information within the policies of the hospital to all visitors coming into the lab.
    • Provides patients, physicians’ offices, nursing homes, and other hospital clinical personnel written or verbal instruction on the appropriate way to collect lab specimens (i.e., 24-hour urines, correct tubes to draw, correct containers for specimens, etc.).
    • Routes all incoming and outgoing mail to the appropriate place.
    • Maintains and sorts all lab orders that have come into the lab by month and year.
    • Trains all staff in clerical areas, including techs, phlebotomists to provide coverage as needed.
    • Maintains considerable knowledge and judgment regarding hospital and departmental regulations, policies and procedures, as well as an understanding of special programs and individual endeavors of the pathologists, lab manager and medical lab director.
    • Uses independent judgment to handle routine administrative duties.
    • Coordinates the work of clerical personnel to meet deadlines for departmental projects.
    • Reviews and verifies all expenditures of the lab: a) The Blood Connection, b) Reference Lab invoices.
    • Reviews diagnosis codes for all lab tests for OP, Physician’s offices, OPS, and nursing homes and notifies if medical necessity is not met or coding appears incorrect.
    • Attempts to obtain signed ABN’s from patients prior to testing when medical necessity is in question. Acts as a liaison between the lab, physician’s offices, other hospital departments, pathologists and nursing homes.
    • Orders supplies for physician’s offices, operating room, pathologists, and nursing homes.
    • Coordinates the Histology and Cytology departments. Logs in all surgical specimens, kidney stones, tissue, pap smears from surgery, physician’s offices or other. Prepares the specimen if needed, with the appropriate fixative and packages the specimens for transport to the pathologists.
    • Coordinates phlebotomy orders between lab and other hospital departments and physician’s offices.
    • Coordinates and gets ready all reports for the couriers to take to the physician’s offices, PML, and Hendersonville.
    • Performs other duties as indicated by the Medical Director, pathologists and/or lab manager.
    • Logs all send out tests to our reference lab into the Reference Lab computer, prints out appropriate paperwork and labels.
    • Troubleshoots in-house laser printers, fax machines, LIS computer, copier, Zebra printers and Reference Lab computer problems.
    • Shreds all required documents and maintains HIPAA compliance
    • Prints off cumulative patient reports as needed.
    • Helps with phlebotomy procedures, collect urines or specimens as needed
    • Labels all blood tubes and other specimens according to policy and distributes to the appropriate department.
    • Helps maintain the collection carts for safety and cleanliness
    • Helps maintain phlebotomy stock and notifies supervisor when stock is low
    • Assists other lab personnel as needed within the boundaries of job description
    • Assists patients if they need a wheelchair or need to be taken out in a wheelchair
    • Abides by all OSHA, HIPAA, Infection Prevention and Corporate Compliance policies, standards, and regulations.
    • Maintains phlebotomy certification.
    • Maintains proficiency of job knowledge and skill by participating in continuing education opportunities
    • Maintains a good working relationship with all lab personnel and other hospital personnel.
    • May perform waived testing once deemed competent. Competency is reassessed annually.
    • May be asked to work any shift or holiday as needed
    • After being trained, help do N95 mask fit testing for lab employees


    Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    •  High School diploma or GED required; prior administrative skills preferred.
    •  One to two years of experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
    •  Phlebotomy certification must be maintained and any continuing education (if required).
    •  One to two years of experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
    •  High level of competency in the use of office equipment including copier, fax, multi-line telephone system, as well as high comfort level with electronic health record systems.
    •  Must be able to exercise a high degree of autonomy in handling all routine administrative duties.
    •  Must be able to use independent judgment.
    •  CPR Certification required or within 3 months of employment and maintain current certification
    •  Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform blood phlebotomy procedures on pediatrics toddlers, adolescents, adults, psychiatric, geriatric and incapacitated patients in accordance with current laboratory policies and procedures.
    •  Good vision (including color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to function effectively in exercising job responsibilities. 
    •  Must be able to perform work in a room with other people, emotional patients and their families, subjected to moderate noise, traffic and interruptions.
    •  Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written; demonstrate professional telephone etiquette and customer service skills with both internal and external customers.
    •  Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite helpful.
    •  Must be comfortable dealing with the public.
