The NREL Applied Research for Communities in Extreme Environments team is transforming energy through applied building science. We are expanding the frontier of scientific knowledge that enables optimized energy use, electrification, renewable generation, and energy storage in the built environment. Our research significantly enhances the resiliency, efficiency, affordability, and decarbonization of energy systems across the United States and the world. Modeling and data analytics are core to our research, which often requires the generation of energy data at scale via both sensor infrastructure and physics-based simulation engines. We seek a creative engineer with experience and thorough understanding of building energy systems and controls, building energy modeling software (such as EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, ResStock, ComStock, and URBANopt), and carbon emissions data. The candidate should also be familiar with developing and reviewing analysis plans and conducting analyses on building energy data. Candidates with clear communication skills and interest and experience in working with external stakeholders are preferred. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with other NREL research teams to identify successful strategies that enable buildings to operate as efficient, grid-integrated resources. The successful candidate will be expected to publish relevant research outcomes in peer-reviewed scientific journals and must be comfortable working across teams to clarify project requirements, address uncertainties, and establish consensus on desired outcomes.
