    Position overview:

    The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), a Directorate of SLAC, and a national research facility for scientific applications using synchrotron radiation at Stanford University is seeking an outstanding IT professional, with extensive experience and expertise in accelerator controls systems including injector, RF, data base and related hardware and software information systems and applications. The position is specifically focused on the SPEAR3 injector control system and its further development and transition to a new platform, while maintaining the current control system to provide full operations capability at a high level of delivery and reliability. The position also has a component in overseeing the design, development and operations of the User Research Administration (URA) business system, which manages the workflow of scientific users that desire access to SLAC’s user facilities. This position is key to meeting the requirement of mission critical availability during 24/7 operations of the overall SSRL synchrotron facility.

    Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible casual-nonexempt position (work less than 50% full-time equivalent), not to exceed 980 hours in a calendar year.

    Your specific responsibilities include:

    • Apply unique skill combinations to create IT solutions and to support particle accelerator operations. Work may involve information theory, computing theory, mathematical simulations, or scientific computing.
    • Develop long range technology plans, and identify applicable new technologies through research, collaboration with peers, and participation in standards organizations, etc.
    • Use up-to-date technology in graphical user interfaces, real-time control software architecture and sophisticated system configurations.
    • Apply IT and controls expertise in maintaining mission critical functionality for applications on the SPEAR3 accelerator complex, particularly, in the following areas:
      • The SPEAR3 injection control systems application
      • The SPEAR3 RF feedback system application
      • The SPEAR3 history plot database
      • The SPEAR3 e-log system
    • The SPEAR3 and SSRL Beam Lines status information including real-time updates to specific web interfaces.
    • Work with user research administrators and IT staff to ensure requirements for workflows, database implementation and full operational functionality are met.
    • Act as the conceptual source for assignments involving more than one area of specialization and/or innovative system design.
    • Plan and coordinate IT efforts with a high degree of dependence upon their individual unique technical contributions.
    • Conceive, design, develop, optimize, integrate, and maintain information technology at a complex level.
    • Troubleshoot highly complex problems for which the analysis and resolution require extensive knowledge of many diverse system components.
    • Provide leadership and IT solutions for complex problems.
    • Other duties may also be assigned.

    To be successful in this position you will bring:

    • A PhD in physics and 15 years of experience in particle accelerator controls systems including hardware, software and data base development, implementation and operational enhancements and upkeep.
    • Deep understanding of information technology approaches, applications (which may include scientific applications), tools, and methodologies, as well as a broad background in a variety of technology platforms.
    • Knowledge of architecture and interrelationships (technical and functional).
    • Ability to combine information technologies to create solutions for complex problems.
    • Proven problem solving, analytical thinking and ability to approach problems logically and systematically.
    • Extensive experience with the OpenVMS operating system.
    • Experience in understanding and managing operating systems such as Linux, VMware, cluster management, etc.
    • Experience in understanding and managing infrastructure: networks, firewall/subnets, SAN, storage systems, backup systems.
    • In-depth experience with IT support for workflows, databases, and development of database driven applications, including experience in managing and developing applications using Oracle Rdb.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

    The expected pay range for this position is $38.83 to $150.00 per hour.
