Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Laboratory Manager, Hazardous Waste

    Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline.  Management experience in an analytical lab setting.  Knowledge of RCRA and/or TSCA regulations is a plus.  Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.

    I. Job Summary

    Ensures the safe and efficient daily operation of the landfill laboratory.

    II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other minor duties may be assigned. 

    • Manages all laboratory personnel, data, and quality control.
    • Implements waste analysis plan and RCRA regulations as it pertains to analysis and testing.
    • Reviews special waste to determine acceptability for hazardous waste disposal.
    • Performs routine laboratory functions as assigned.
    • Facilitates the receipt of materials for treatment and disposal in compliance with WM policies and procedures, including state and federal guidelines.
    • Applies appropriate treatment and disposal methodologies to be utilized at the facility for the specific waste.
    • Ensures that the health and safety of the employees and environment is maximized.
    • Oversees personnel needs of the laboratory including selecting, coaching, and training employees and evaluating employee performance.  Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
    • Works with other supervisors/managers to coordinate services and keep them informed as issues arise.
    • Keeps district manager fully informed of all problems or matters requiring his/her attention.
    • Makes personal contact with customers and assists them with questions and/or concerns as appropriate.
    • Ensures safety, cleanliness and organization of laboratory work area and related storage areas.
    • Conducts and/or attends and contributes to periodic meetings to maintain favorable working relationships among employees.
    • Provides training and presentations as needed in a positive and professional manner.
    • Updates and submits required reports in a timely manner.
    III. Supervisory Responsibilities

    The highest level of supervisory skills required in this job is the management of supervisory employees.  This includes:

    Direct supervision of, approximately, 4 full-time employees, including: Lab Technicians

     
    IV. Qualifications

    The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

    A. Education and Experience

    Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) in Chemistry, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four years of relevant work experience. 

    Experience: Seven years of relevant work experience (in addition to education requirement).

    B.  Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

    None required.

    C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

    None required.

    The expected salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location.
