Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Responsibilities

    • Promote professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
    • Display technical expertise necessary to ensure timely and accurate results of laboratory procedures.
    • Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
    • Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
    • Support organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
    • Attain required competency and demonstrate the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
    • Exhibit problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results.
    • Participate in the training/mentoring of new employees, students or interns including lectures and bench techniques.
    • Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
    • Demonstrate proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, perform proper prompt specimen transport.
    • Responsible for other duties as assigned.
    • Engage in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
    • Promote consensus building and applies techniques of conflict resolution and conduct improvement.
    • Retain accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
    • Promote service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
    • Oversee specific area(s) within clinical laboratory operations, serving as the coordinator and expert in the assigned area. i.e. Point of care testing, quality, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, outreach, pathology, phlebotomy, laboratory pre-analytics.
    • May work with multiple departments within the laboratory or across the hospital/health system.

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or Physical Science OR Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician
    • ASCP or equivalent. Certification must be maintained without lapse during employment. If certification does lapse, job will be downgraded to Medical Laboratory Scientist (non-certified) or Medical Laboratory Technician (non-certified) until certification is reinstated.
    • Current knowledge of clinical laboratory techniques and principles

    Preferred Job Requirements

    • Five years of clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist within a clinical laboratory.
