The Manager of Laboratory Operations is responsible for managing the Radata Analytical Lab and oversees the quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement within the laboratory. This role is pertinent in the management and maintenance of effective department operations and ensures efficient performance and high-quality service.
Essential Functions
•Lead the day-to-day laboratory operations overseeing process and people management of the function.
•Ensure compliance with laboratory accreditation, regulatory standards, and information management policies by providing leadership and guidance to staff to ensure that quality policies, processes and procedures are established, current and adhered to by all laboratory staff.
•Analyze data, identify trends, monitor prevention and correction of quality deviations, and develop reports for management utilizing technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
•Report on findings to executive leadership and establish department goals for growth.
•Monitor customer satisfaction and performance metrics; present findings and implement recommendations for improvement.
•Oversee internal audit processes, external assessments, proficiency testing programs; document control systems; competency assessment; training and other quality processes.
•Identify staff training needs, as well as design and implement internal training programs specific to the quality system.
•Develop and document department procedures to ensure consistent and accurate processing; establish processes and policies for effective and professional communication between laboratory staff and stakeholders.
•Recommend best practices to maintain and improve project outcomes or laboratory functions; facilitate laboratory improvement activities.
•Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
•Working knowledge of accreditation standards, practices, and guidelines sufficient to advise and guide laboratory managers and supervisors as they implement and maintain accreditation.
•Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
•Working knowledge of computer and analytical software programs sufficient for evaluation of electronic data, data interpretation, and report development.
•A strong understanding of the principles, practices, and techniques of the various analytical areas of the laboratory.
•Excellent organizational skills allowing the coordination of multi-faceted QA activities.
•Ability to manage complex projects independently and in a team environment, maintaining good working relationships with multi-cultural and multi-discipline staff.
•Ability to analyze and interpret written information and scientific data, compare against established requirements, identify potential discrepancies, and make suggestions for improvement.
•Ability to conduct and report quality assurance audits and reviews to determine compliance status and recommend corrective action plans.
Physical Demands and Work environment
•This job operates primarily in an office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.
•Work around machinery and heavy equipment.
•Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
•Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds.
Supervisory Responsibilities
•Oversee day-to-day operations, which includes problem solving issues and ensuring effective processing.
•Recruits, interviews, and selects qualified candidates following established hiring practices and guidelines.
•Monitors and verifies the compliance of staff regarding maintaining required licenses and certifications, as applicable.
•In conjunction with HR, performs employee relations functions effectively to promote a positive work environment, influence retention and enhance communication.
Travel Required
•Travel on an as needed basis.
Education and Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in a science related field is required.
•An advanced degree in business, organizational development, or scientific-related field is preferred.
•A minimum of five to ten years progressive experience obtaining additional duties and responsibilities in a laboratory and three to five years’ experience directly managing laboratory operations.
•Experience working with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Science and Laboratory Research Program.
