Job Description:
The Laboratory Manager will play a vital role in the success of the Technical Department at American Water Chemicals by leading laboratory operations, overseeing analytical testing procedures, and contributing to quality improvement and throughput in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
Laboratory Management
· Lead a team of 10-15 professionals and technicians, managing day-to-day laboratory operations to ensure efficient workflow, resource allocation, and adherence to safety protocols.
· Improve efficiency and throughput of the services provided by the laboratory.
· Schedule work efficiently.
· Review all assembled reports to ensure quality.
· Oversee equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
· Keep ISO documentation and SOPs up to date.
· Develop and implement quality control procedures to maintain high standards of accuracy and precision in the data and report generation.
· Manage inventory and procurement of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and consumables.
· Execute analytical methods for water and membrane analysis, including but not limited to, chemical composition analysis, membrane performance evaluation, and contaminant detection.
· Understand the principles and be able to interpret data from a variety of analytical instruments and techniques. Experience with instruments such as ICP-OES, TOC, Zeta potential, Streaming Potential, IC, SEM-EDS, Raman, FTIR, and UV-Vis is a plus.
Team Management
· Supervise and mentor laboratory staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to foster professional growth and development.
· Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork, communication, and knowledge sharing among team members.
· Delegate tasks effectively, prioritize workload, and manage deadlines to meet project timelines and deliverables.
Project Management
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute laboratory experiments, research projects, and product development initiatives.
· Track project progress, analyze data, and prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal stakeholders and external partners.
· Identify opportunities for process improvement, innovation, and cost optimization to enhance laboratory efficiency and productivity.
Job Requirements:
· Minimum of 10 years of experience in laboratory management, preferably in a water treatment and membrane technology environment using the instrumentation described above.
· Proficiency in analytical techniques and instrumentation used in water analysis and membrane/material characterization.
· Strong leadership and people skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
· Experience with quality management systems, regulatory compliance, and safety protocols in a laboratory setting.
· Proven history of project management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
· Knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in water treatment and membrane science.
