Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Phlebotomist Job Duties:

    1. Performs blood specimen collection from patients using a variety of techniques and devices for laboratory procedures and tests.
      • Specimens are collected using approved blood collection devices and may be collected from veins or capillaries (finger and heel sticks).
      • Specimens are collected from patients ranging in age from newborn to geriatric.
      • Routine uncomplicated blood draws are to be completed in five minutes or less.
      • Use sterile swabs to collect specimens for rapid bacterial and viral antigen tests.
      • Instruct patients in the proper collection of urine specimens for random and timed urine testing.
    2. Use the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to enter and record patient demographics, specimen collection and receipt, process specimens, order tests, print labels and forms, generate reports and transmit results as indicated or directed.
    3. Discuss Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) with patients as it applies to their Medicare insurance coverage. 
    4. Prepare and distribute specimens in a timely manner for in-house testing and for referral to reference laboratories according to laboratory policy and procedure.  Preparation includes verification of specimen ID and labeling, centrifugation, pour off, storage, routing to other clinic laboratory locations, and packaging and shipping for transport to reference laboratories.
    5. Evaluate specimens collected and received for testing for discrepancies in specimen type and test ordered, collection, appearance, and handling.  Reject those samples that are unacceptable according to established laboratory policy.

    License/Certification:

    1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.  Must be 18 years of age or older.
    2. Phlebotomy certification preferred. 
    3. Veni-puncture experience required.
    4. Able to keep nervous patient calm and reassure anyone who is anxious or squeamish about the procedure.
    5. Knowledgeable of various techniques used to collect blood specimens and able to converse with patients to avoid any fear of procedures.
