Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Description:

    JOB SUMMARY:

    This position is responsible for the laboratory operations at Columbia Basin Hospital (CBH), including: maintaining QC and proficiency testing programs; monitoring billing compliance program; evaluation of new procedures and equipment; preparation of summary and statistical reports; and writing, reviewing, and updating policies and procedures. Reports to the Administrator. Works with all members of management team.

    DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Maintains records of competencies for departmental staff.
    • Establishes acceptable QC and reportable ranges. Is responsible for review of Quality Control and calibration verification data.
    • Prepares, reviews and oversees corrective action and troubleshooting reports.
    • Enrolls CBH in an appropriate proficiency testing program(s), assigns and rotates staff participation, and evaluates the graded and ungraded results.
    • Evaluates and prepares new procedures for implementation.
    • Oversees proper maintenance and operation of equipment. Evaluates and compares new instrumentation.
    • Prepares monthly and annual summary and statistical reports.
    • Monitors the Laboratory billing compliance program.
    • Evaluates or assists in evaluating contracts/agreements for services to the Lab (ie: blood supply). Prepares or assists in preparation of contracts/agreements for services provided by Lab (ie: nursing home phlebotomy).
    • Provides departmental staff opportunities for continuing education and professional development.
    • Educates others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of SDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, body mechanics and Basic Life Support.
    • Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures.
    • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
    • Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
    • Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.
    • Prepares employee time schedules and adjusts schedules as needed to ensure appropriate coverage of department.
    • Responsible for accurate editing of employee timeclock activity each pay period.
    • Writes, reviews and updates departmental policies and procedures

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelors degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or in a medical technology area with one year of post-baccalaureate clinical laboratory internship or equivalent experience. National certification as MT (ASCP or equivalent) must be obtained within one year from hire or effective date in Laboratory Manager Position. Three or more years of practical lab experience following certification or licensure, supervisory experience and one year of training in the medical technology field is preferred. Position requires competency of computer software and must be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills and the ability to seek resources for direction. Must be able to demonstrate independent problem-solving skills, show accountability for self while practicing within legal and ethical guidelines, and care for customers/patients across the age continuum. Must be able to speak, read, write, follows oral/written instructions in English.
