    Essential Functions
    Function: Leads and manages all operations and functions of laboratory safety. Ensures operations are responsive to relevant federal, state, local and institutional regulations and procedures while providing the highest level of service to meet the needs of the university community.

    Typical:
    • Leads the university research community in the oversight and coordination of laboratory safety relating to biological, chemical, radiation, laser, and hazardous materials risks as well as the select agent and toxins program.
    • Coordinates the development, implementation, and understanding of standard operating procedures for laboratory safety across all university units and functions.
    • Oversees programs designed to monitor, inspect, and ensure compliance of research and laboratories with preventative or corrective actions to insure health and safety.
    • Provides leadership and management of laboratory incidents and accident resolutions through investigations, recommendations of preventative or corrective measures, and program modifications to reduce the possibility for reoccurrence.
    • Designs and executes educational, training, and outreach programs to provide faculty, staff, and students opportunities to improve their understanding of laboratory safety and their respective roles in university laboratory safety.
    • Serves as the subject matter expert on changing regulations and requirements applicable to research laboratories and interprets them into practice at UTSA.
    • Develops and maintains related reports and metrics to inform strategic planning and decision making.
    • Maintains strong levels of communication and coordination with various university departments, such as risk management, facilities, institutional compliance, academic colleges, and faculty governance committees.
    • Advises research and safety committees and boards, and oversees review and approval processes.
    • Manages federal, state, system, and local oversight processes and inspections; evaluates practices and develops and implements improvements.
    • Maintains current knowledge of scientific, technical and/or regulatory developments related to research safety.
    • Serves as a representative for the AVP as needed.
    • Performs additional duties as assigned.

      Required Qualifications
    • Master's degree from an accredited institution in related fields.
    • Five years of research safety or compliance experience, including a minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively across units and with various levels of a business or university with tolerance and respect for a diversity of perspectives.
    • Demonstrated experience in oversight of laboratory, environmental, or risk-based safety programs.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • A strong work ethic and customer service attitude.
    • Flexibility to adapt to the needs of the position, including conflict-resolution and de-escalation of stressful situations.
    • Experience or education in fiscal management.
    • Successful clearance from an FBI criminal background check.
    • Employee is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances.

      Preferred Qualifications
    • PhD from an accredited institution in related fields and/or eight years experience in an academic research and safety environment.
    • Certifications such as Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP); Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP); Certified Hazardous Materials Management (CHHM); Chemical Hygiene Officer Certification (CHO); and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
    • Five years of research safety experience in an academic setting, including a minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
    • At least two years of experience working with or managing select agent safety.

      Working Conditions
    • Physical requirements include frequent sitting, talking, hearing, walking, and standing. Occasionally requires reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to ten pounds.
    • Work with hazardous materials and areas where infectious agents, select agents, chemicals, and radiation-producing equipment are present.
    • Frequent exposure to specialized lab equipment.
    • Common externally imposed deadlines that require resetting priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days.
    • Occasional evening/weekend/holiday hours and availability to respond to emergencies required.
    • Travel between university campuses will be required.
    • Some conference and meeting travel may be required.
      This position will be primarily located:

      On Campus: Primary work location will be on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
