Lactation Consultant provides lactation support and education to patients and families. May plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers. Being a Lactation Consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems, and advising physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients. Requires an associate degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Lactation Consultant requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. This position, under the general supervision of the breastfeeding Coordinator is responsible for assisting BFC in performing high risk breastfeeding consultations with clients within established federal, state and local agency guidelines and regulations of Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC). This position is also responsible for assisting the BFC with mentoring and supporting staff to improve and encourage a supportive breastfeeding environment.
