Lactation Consultant provides lactation support and education to patients and families. May plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers. Being a Lactation Consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems, and advising physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients. Requires an associate degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Lactation Consultant requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Position Summary
Summary:
Oversees all aspects of the Lactation education and support for staff and patients in Perinatal Services. Additional responsibilities include the coordination of the Prepared Childbirth Program for Perinatal Services. Responsible to practice within the scope of licensure in accordance with approved policies, procedures and protocols. Actively participates in departmental performance improvement plan. Serve as an expert resource in lactation for unit and house wide staff. Must identify opportunities for and contribute to the improvement of quality, safety and cost, as well as patient and customer satisfaction.

- Lactation Consultant
- Actively coordinates lactation support and education for patients, family and staff
- Plans and coordination of the Prepared Childbirth Program for patient prenatal and post-delivery education including curriculum development, instructor supervision planning, coordination and scheduling of classes according to departments practice guidelines.
- Role models through professional development continuous learning and improvement of competence in the practice of lactation and prepared childbirth education.
- Consistently coaches, teaches and mentors others to continuously increase competence of staff and improve breastfeeding outcomes.
- Participates in the orientation of new staff in regards to department’s lactation services and education.
- Assumes accountability for personal and professional growth and development of one's own potential, including participation in activities that promote patient care.
- Develops and oversees the budget needed to maintain the Lactation services within our Departments budgetary constraints.
