Legal Services Director oversees the activities of the organization's legal department. Provides legal advice, interpretation, and guidance to senior management and officers regarding contracts, state/federal regulatory requirements, intellectual property or trademark protection, and other business matters. Being a Legal Services Director reviews all information and prepares defense for any legal actions against the organization or advises on prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the organization. Coordinates and reviews the work of internal or external legal staff. Additionally, Legal Services Director manages staff of attorneys. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to top management. The Legal Services Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. The Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA) is seeking an innovative, collaborative, and continuous learner to serve as its next Director of Policy and Legal Services.
Guided by WSSDA’s mission, vision, and goals, this person will work closely with the communications officer to identify and fulfill the communication needs of WSSDA and the 1,477 locally elected school board members who are its members.
A state agency, WSSDA helps school boards perform effective governance by providing research-based professional development opportunities, model policy development and legal resources, and assisting board members with communicating the needs of their school districts to Washington’s legislators.
Established in 1922, WSSDA’s services and supports are available to boards from all 295 school districts serving more than 1.1 million students in Washington state. The school districts have combined local, state, and federal annual budgets of nearly $11 billion, and employ more than 160,000 people.
The WSSDA office is located in Olympia, Washington where 14 staff members are employed on a hybrid schedule combining in-office and remote work.
