Researches publications and suggests new sources and offerings for acquisition to enhance the collection. Being a LIBRARIAN performs cataloging and creates bibliographies and metadata to classify the library's collection of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual, and other materials. Designs and delivers research support processes and services to ensure that groups and individuals can access requested materials. Additionally, LIBRARIAN distributes up-to-date information on new acquisitions, library activities, and services. Oversees the selection and maintenance of technology infrastructure and tools used in the library. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The LIBRARIAN occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     JOB DESCRIPTION
    Houston Academy is a premier independent, college preparatory school located in Dothan, AL. Houston
    Academy is searching for a Lower School (grades PK-4) librarian (beginning in the 2023-24 school year).

    REQUIREMENTS
    The Lower School Librarian should possess a minimum of a four-year degree in Library Science or a related
    field. A master’s degree and experience in an educational setting are preferred.

    The Lower Librarian:
    • Is a leader who instills enthusiasm in others by making them feel that they are important members of a

    team. Strong leaders foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and openness to new ideas,
    welcoming and encouraging input from others to create consensus

    • Loves reading and developing library programming for children
    • Is an enthusiastic, self-motivated, lifelong learner
    • Is an excellent teacher
    JOB DUTIES
    The Lower School Librarian reports to the Lower School Head. Responsibilities include the following:
    • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of
    instruction
    • Provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the Lower School library program is aligned

    with the mission, goals, and objectives of Houston Academy and that it is an integral component of the
    learning/instructional program

    • Represent the school at various regional, state, and national associations relative to the role of being the
    Librarian
    • Maintain active memberships in professional associations
    • Demonstrate his or her role as a visible and active leader within the school community by serving on

    decision making teams in the school, and taking an active role in school improvement and accreditation
    activities

    • Remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational
    research applicable to school library programs
    • Use local, state, national, and international school library data and research to engage support
    • Participate participating in the curriculum development process
    • Join with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of

    reading and lifelong learning; in particular, the Librarian and Media Specialist will read or provide adult
    readers to students in the Lower School on a regular basis

    • Deliver leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information
    resources and technologies in all formats
    • Provide support and instruction for teachers and students in the Accelerated Reader program.
    • Provide for and update a policy on challenged materials in the library collection
    • Organize and execute the Book Fair
    • Prepare and administer the school library program budget
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
    • Support the school and its leadership

    INFORMATION
    Salary will be commensurate with degree level and teaching experience.
