LIBRARIAN develops and maintains a collection of books and other materials and provides research and reference support to library users. Researches publications and suggests new sources and offerings for acquisition to enhance the collection. Being a LIBRARIAN performs cataloging and creates bibliographies and metadata to classify the library's collection of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual, and other materials. Designs and delivers research support processes and services to ensure that groups and individuals can access requested materials. Additionally, LIBRARIAN distributes up-to-date information on new acquisitions, library activities, and services. Oversees the selection and maintenance of technology infrastructure and tools used in the library. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The LIBRARIAN occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     Youth Services Librarians provide professional assistance and programming to support customers, birth through high school, and their caregivers. They promote education and literacy for all ages of youth by implementing creative programming and maintaining and recommending appropriate resources. Youth Services Librarians educate general library staff to address the needs of children and caregivers and support staff offering programs geared toward youth. Youth Services Librarians work under the general supervision of a Library Manager.

    Typical Schedule:
    Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
    Thursdays: 8:45 am - 5:15 pm
    With rotating Saturdays

    Essential Duties

    1. Plan and present library programs and events for children from birth through high school, and their parents, caregivers and teachers
    a. Introduce literature and early literacy skill development through regular story time programs for babies, toddlers and preschool-age children
    b. Plan and present class visits, tours, and other specialized programs for preschool and school-age youth
    c. Develop and conduct programs for adults which encourage development of children’s reading, listening, and viewing skills
    d. Engage in outreach to and develop partnerships with schools, daycares, preschools, and other community organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers
    e. Participate in Brown County Library-wide youth programs such as the annual summer library programs
    f. Develop, promote, and implement initiatives for enhancing education and fostering literacy
    g. Promote library services through public speaking, conducting workshops and in-service events, and providing community organizations with information about the Library

    2. Assist customers with using the Library
    a. Meets customers’ needs for information by answering research questions and locating appropriate library resources, providing referrals when necessary
    b. Recommend books and other materials based on customer preferences and knowledge of the collection
    c. Provide help with library technology such as public computers, the library catalog, and digital resources
    d. Use library circulation system to check materials in and out, and perform customer service for library patrons
    e. Monitor and appropriately address behavior issues to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all customers
    f. Maintain a pleasant, inviting environment in the youth services area, create displays and signage, etc.

    3. Support the mission and strategic goals of the Library
    a. Assist with or conduct large-scale projects and events
    b. Assist in evaluating, selecting, and maintaining library materials for youth
    c. Serve on Brown County Library-wide committees as assigned or required
    d. Attend and participate in staff and departmental meetings, as well as training sessions
    e. Work with other staff and community partners to research, write, and implement grant proposals
    f. Suggest needs and possible resources to Manager and assist with preparation of Brown County Library budget requests and Friends of Brown County Library funding requests
    g. In the absence of a Manager, provide guidance and direction to other staff
    h. Prepare statistics and other reports of library services
    i. Provide Brown County Library-wide support on library resources, story time, early literacy strategies, and other initiatives
    j. Perform other related duties as needed or assigned

    4. Build and maintain community relationships through networking and outreach
    a. Strengthen community contacts, relating library objectives and services that meet community needs
    b. Act as a liaison to community groups and organizations to build partnerships that extend library services through that group
    c. Speak publicly as an expert in a subject area or about library services
    d. Find experts in the community to provide services or programming that meet customer needs
    e. Maintain professional knowledge through workshops, meetings, membership in professional organizations, and reading current literature

    Minimum Qualifications Required

    Education and Experience:
    A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university; or a Bachelor's degree in a field of study directly related to the job to be performed plus three years of related work experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

    3. Detailed knowledge of library materials and services for youth

    5. Effectively administer Brown County Library policies and procedures
    6. Assess users’ needs and provide consistently exceptional customer service
    7. Complete closing duties, including clearing and securing the building
    8. Identify problems and take action to develop appropriate solutions or refer to a supervisor when necessary
    9. Make presentations to varying sized groups of youth and adults
    10. Effectively coordinate and direct the work of others
    11. Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances
    12. Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
    13. Perform accurate cash handling
    14. Represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner
    15. Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base
    16. Work independently with minimal supervision
    17. Appropriately multitask and prioritize
    18. Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail
    19. Follow detailed verbal and written instructions
    20. Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library
    21. Adapt to changes in the work environment
    22. Effectively use general office equipment and software, including but not limited to computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, cash drawer, audio-visual equipment, word processing, and email
    23. Demonstrate proficient technology skills, including but not limited to working with the library specific software and databases, and efficient use of Automated Materials Handling system
