LIBRARIAN develops and maintains a collection of books and other materials and provides research and reference support to library users. Researches publications and suggests new sources and offerings for acquisition to enhance the collection. Being a LIBRARIAN performs cataloging and creates bibliographies and metadata to classify the library's collection of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual, and other materials. Designs and delivers research support processes and services to ensure that groups and individuals can access requested materials. Additionally, LIBRARIAN distributes up-to-date information on new acquisitions, library activities, and services. Oversees the selection and maintenance of technology infrastructure and tools used in the library. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Communication Skills (oral, written, or business): Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries. Includes filling out forms.
Knowledge of grammatical structure, vocabulary for preparing correspondence from rough draft or proofing of completed material. Communicates in clear, grammatically correct English.
Data Recording/Record Keeping: Performs data recording/record keeping operations determining what changes need to be made to existing records, including computerized records
Mathematical Skills: Performs routine computations requiring knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and/or percentages.
Reads and interprets routine written or printed materials such as charts, diagrams, maps or instruction material.
Business Machines (like computers, copiers, etc.): Uses business machines that can be easily learned from non-complex manuals or verbal instructions. Such machines include but are not limited to photocopiers, laminators, duplicator, CRT/computers (no software experience). May on occasion use more difficult machines without any proficiency required, such as data entry.
Office Filing and Retrieving: Responsible for filing and retrieving from an existing filing system.
Contact with Others: has regular contact by telephone or in-person with the public to determine actual information needed, to locate media from other libraries, etc. Job requires interpreting and translating facts and information, explaining situations and issues to persons and advising them of alternative courses of action.
