LIBRARIAN develops and maintains a collection of books and other materials and provides research and reference support to library users. Being a LIBRARIAN performs cataloging and creates bibliographies and metadata to classify the library's collection of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual, and other materials. Designs and delivers research support processes and services to ensure that groups and individuals can access requested materials. Additionally, LIBRARIAN distributes up-to-date information on new acquisitions, library activities, and services. Oversees the selection and maintenance of technology infrastructure and tools used in the library. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The LIBRARIAN occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     DEFINITION:
    To manage the Children’s and Young Adult (CYA) Department. The CYA Librarian is responsible for meeting the needs of children, families and community members serving children and families through the development and implementation of CYA library services. Responsible for receiving, selecting, and maintaining materials for the CYA collection. Develops and implements story times, programs, workshops, classes, tours, and other community outreach to meet the reading and educational interests of the community and further the mission of the library.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
    Receives supervision from the Library Director.
    Exercises supervision over volunteers working in the CYA Department.
    EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:-Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    Provides system-wide expertise and training on children’s literature, child development and current research, trends and focuses on CYA services.
    Supervise the activities and operations of CYA services/programs. Programs and events will take place in the library and out in the community.
    Educate and assist patrons in the use of various CYA library services, equipment and materials; access and retrieve information from databases for the library patrons and staff as requested.
    Collaborates with other library staff, community agencies, schools, and local organizations to develop programs and services.
    Evaluates and maintains the CYA collection and makes recommendations for collection development based on community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials. Classifies materials, evaluates materials, utilizes statistical data and reports for collection maintenance, and makes withdrawals according to library guidelines. Also, able to maintain statistics for CYA department.
    Performs exceptional internal and external customer service.
    Assists in preparing the annual budget, particularly as it relates to CYA needs. Evaluates and purchases materials for the CYA department.
    Review new publications and collection development materials and make recommendations on materials for acquisition and disposition as appropriate.
    Other Important Responsibilities and Duties:
    Coordinate activities of assigned functions with other functional areas of the library.
    Trains the public on the use of library technologies and library resources; provides instructional technology programming; incorporates relevant technologies into library services and programs.
    Creates attractive and timely displays and merchandise library materials.
    Assist children in locating and choosing appropriate materials advise children, parents and teachers in choosing materials for children of all ages.
    Works closely with teachers, preschool operators, and parents providing recreational, educational, and curricular materials.
    Provides reference desk coverage.
    Supervises volunteers.
    Research grant opportunities and assists the Library Director in writing grants.
    Attends workshops, conferences, and professional seminars to stay current with the latest developments and technologies in the field of library and information science.
    Undertakes special projects at the request of the Library Director.
    Perform other related duties and duties assigned by Director.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Knowledge Of:
    Current principles and practices of public library service and the future emerging roles of public libraries.
    Child development and public library early literacy practices.
    Library collection development practices.
    Proficiency with computers and technology including Windows, Microsoft Office, mobile devices and apps, computer networks and printers, the Internet, and online databases.
    Library operations, procedures and policies as well as City policies.
    Strong written and oral communication skills.
    Basic mathematics principles.
    Extensive CYA background.
    Modern office methods, practices, procedures and equipment.
    Aptitude for dealing with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
    Purchasing methods, policies and procedures.
    Ability To::
    Exercise sound judgement and rational thinking under stressful circumstances.
    Operate effectively in an economically and culturally diverse environment.
    Convey enthusiasm about learning, stories, information, library resources, and the library’s roles in the community.
    Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Work independently and work well with others, including in a collaborative manner to achieve desired outcomes.
    Be accurate, thorough and timely in the completion of assignments.
    Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgement.
    Operate assigned equipment including a computer, printer, copier, fax machine, and camera.
    Use library automation and information/database retrieval systems. Learn new computerized searching techniques on a variety of informational and bibliographic databases.
    Act as a liaison between the library and community.
    Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • making observations
    • reading and writing
    • locating and classifying various library materials
    • operating assigned equipment
    • communicating with others
    Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
    • standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • kneeling, squatting, climbing, stooping, filing, dragging, holding, lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

    Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of:

    • perform library tasks
    Experience and Training Guidelines:
    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
    Experience:
    Two years of professional library experience (CYA preferred) in a municipal library.
    Training
    Possession of a Master of Library Science degree from an accredited college or university is required.
