    Are you enthusiastic about supporting library workers as they implement policies, programs, and services that meet the needs of their communities? This support typically takes the form of building relationships with library workers, collaborating to develop learning opportunities (online and in-person) to address identified needs, researching answers to questions from constituents, and maintaining partnerships with other organizations serving library workers to achieve common goals.

    Are you curious to learn more about Texas libraries and the communities they serve? In this role, you would actively seek feedback from constituents, collecting and analyzing survey results and other data to inform your work.

    Would you be interested in exploring and contributing to developments in library services at the state and national level? You would have the support of colleagues who are active and engaged in the Texas library community and nationally and would be encouraged to add your voice to the discussion.

    What does the job look like?
    The Library Staff Consultant collaborates to ensure Texas libraries are knowledgeable about and have resources to implement library services that meet the needs of their communities. The Library Staff Consultant also serves as a primary contact for internal, statewide, and national initiatives and projects relating to trends and best practices in library customer service and issues encountered by front-line library workers.
    • Plan /Coordinate, implement, and present a statewide program of learning related to best practices in customer service, programming in public libraries, staff development, and similar topics.
    • Collaborate with internal and external partners to enhance TSLAC programs and services related to front-line library workers.
    • Consult with Texas librarians, library boards, and interested citizens on a broad range of library-related topics.
    • Maintain a variety of resources for assigned projects via agency blog and website.

    Qualifications

    What does it take to qualify (minimum)?
    Salary Range: Librarian III: $4990.50-$5149.32 or Librarian IV: $5687.50-$5872.15 per month commensurate with experience.
    • Master’s degree in library and information science from a professionally accredited library program
    • Two-three years’ work experience providing public service in libraries.
    • Experience presenting to groups.
    • Experience organizing projects.

    Areas of knowledge and experience: trends and practices in public libraries encountered by front-line staff; presenting to groups or delivering training; coordinating projects; community engagement, outreach, and communication; maintaining partnerships; taking initiative and working independently and/or as part of a team; establishing goals and objectives.

    Other things we look for (preferred):
    • Experience as a front-line library worker, and/or experience providing support to library workers (examples include formal or informal advising, coaching, consulting, or mentoring, formal or informal leadership positions, etc.), preferably in a public library.
    • Experience in community engagement or outreach, especially with diverse communities.
    • Experience creating or managing partnerships.
    • Experience planning and managing projects.
    • Experience delivering training.
    • Experience in the area of adult programming and services in public libraries.
    • Experience or formal education in one or more of the following: adult education, customer service, library programming, social work, staff development/training peers, trauma-informed care or trauma-informed services.
    • Work experience with a variety of online tools and applications (e.g. social media, web content management systems, blogs, survey tools).
    • Experience with online meeting software and learning management systems (e.g. Zoom, GoToWebinar, Totara, Moodle).
    • Experience working in or with multiple types of libraries or library consortia.
    • Bilingual—Spanish.

    • Provide writing samples at the time of application. These could include training or outreach materials developed, written procedures or other documentation, and/or web pages created, etc.
    • If selected for an interview, you will make a 15-minute presentation on an assigned topic to be delivered following the interview.
    • Occasional work over 40 hours a week may be required, for which you will earn compensatory time.
    • Overnight travel and travel by vehicle and commercial air required; up to 20% of time may be spent traveling.
    • Must have valid Texas driver license or obtain Texas driver license within 30 days of employment.
    • Copy of valid auto insurance card and driving record required of selected applicant.
