Library Director
The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Commerce Public Library invites applications for the library director position to plan, manage, direct, implement, promote and oversee the activities and operations of the Commerce Public Library. The Commerce Public Library is a newly renovated, historic facility located in a rural college town within a diverse community less than an hour from the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree, 3 years of library work experience or comparable institutional, educational, or non-profit experience. Ideal start date is May 1, 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as the general manager of the library in charge of the usual duties of this office including hiring and supervision of staff and volunteers; developing the collections (based on a written collection development policy approved by the board); administering the operating budget; planning and executing exhibits, events, and special programs.
- Prepares all library reports such as monthly reports to the Board, annual reports to the City of Commerce and the Texas State Library, and other useful reports as necessary.
- Manages the onsite passport acceptance agency.
- Manages fundraising including grants, gifts, endowments, etc.
- Oversees community relations and library promotion and marketing through various media, activities, and events.
- Attends all regular and special meetings of the Board, working closely with and advising the Board of relevant library policies, issues, and projects. Develops and implements policies as adopted by the Board.
- Prepares and administers an annual budget, and with the library Board treasurer presents it for approval to the entire Board in time to meet the City of Commerce annual budget process.
- Uses good accounting practices to document expenses and prepare payroll and other back office assignments.
- Makes such purchases as are included in the annual budget. Engages the Board for approval for additional purchases not allocated in the budget.
- Serves as the program director of the adult literacy program.
- Oversees the care and maintenance of the contents of the building, including furniture and equipment.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of library work experience or comparable institutional, educational, or non-profit experience
- Supervisory experience
- Strong communication skills
- Basic understanding of software and technical networking
- Ability to create media and publications
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Must have a valid State of Texas driver’s license
Preference will be given for:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Experience planning and implementing cost- efficient and diverse programs that reflect the community’s needs and interests
- Ability to promote library programs to diverse communities
- Expertise in managing employees
