LIBRARY/MEDIA PARAPROFESSIONAL

  • The duties include but are not limited to:

    • Helps students locate reference materials and other instructional materials.
    • Assists the library/media specialist in maintaining proper student discipline.
    • Works with teachers in planning assignments likely to lead to extended use of library/media center resources.
    • Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skills in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
    • Processes orders, reports, forms, library/media center schedules, letters to publishers, and catalog cards.
    • Orders and receives books selected for purchase by the library/media specialist.
    • Maintains files of catalog cards, vertical file material, and publishers' catalogs.
    • Writes daily notices to homeroom teachers concerning overdue books and collects fines for such books.
    • Makes simple repairs on damaged books and processes more severely damaged books for repair at the bindery.
    • Monitors attendance in the library/media center and keeps attendance.
    • Prepares materials for reserve on teachers' requests and maintains the reserve shelf.
    • Prepares and maintains current magazines for shelving and shelves incoming materials.
    • Assists in the annual inventory of library/media center materials and prepares lists of missing materials and materials to be discarded.
    • Maintains current inventory or supplies and suggests items for acquisition as needed.
    • Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library/media center and its displays.
    • Performs other tasks as designated by the principal and library/media specialists.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Successful completion of at least 48 semester hours of study at an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the courses were taken; OR
    • An Associate's Degree or higher documented on an official transcript from an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the degree was earned; OR
    • A passing score of 3 or higher on the state-prescribed WorkKeys Assessments. The tests currently required are Applied Math, Work Place Documents and Business Writing.

    Official Transcripts and Score Reports documenting successful completion of all education requirements will be required prior to beginning work in the position.

    **Applicants selected for classified positions must undergo (or have undergone) an ABI/FBI criminal history background check (fingerprinting administered through sites selected and approved by the MCPSS and State of Alabama Education Department) and be declared suitable and fit to teach under state law.
