Class Concept
Acts as a courier for the Salem Public Library, driving a scheduled courier route and additional routes as required; transporting library materials, supplies, and recycling to designated locations; and other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
Drives a scheduled pickup and delivery route, including to unattended buildings as needed
Picks up, transports and delivers materials and interdepartmental mail from the City of Salem Public Library to other City buildings and locations
Picks up, transports and delivers materials and interdepartmental mail to other libraries in the Roanoke Valley Libraries consortium and to other libraries are required
Sorts materials efficiently and accurately into correct transport bins
Ensures adequate stock of transport bins at Salem Public Library
Adheres to established transportation procedures and safe driving practices
Obeys all traffic laws and regulations
Refuels vehicle regularly and independently
Routinely inspect delivery vehicle to ensure proper working condition, including lights, gas gauge, mirrors, turn signals, tires and brakes
Alerts appropriate supervising staff to maintenance and repair needs
Reports severe delays, accidents or other traffic/transportation issues
Ensures that delivery vehicle interior and exterior are kept clean and notifies appropriate staff of detailing needs
Schedules and/or takes vehicle to approved automotive repair shop(s) for maintenance and repairs as required
Drops off Salem Public Library recycling at nearby recycling centers as required
Attends workshops or training as required
Performs other related duties as assigned

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At least two years driving with a Virginia driver’s license required.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED required. Must pass drug, alcohol, and background checks prior to hiring. Must provide a copy of Virginia driving record in good standing if selected for interview.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Detailed knowledge of Virginia driving requirements, general knowledge of library services, ability to perform physical work moving large boxes of library or other materials, ability to sort and use independent reason to perform tasks efficiently and successfully.
