    TITLE: Part-time Library Assistant / Youth Services Assistant
    REPORTS TO: Supervising Librarian of Youth Services and Circulation Supervisor
    SUPERVISES: n/a
    GRADE CLASSIFICATION: Part-time / Middletown Public Library Employees Association / NEARI
    SALARY: In accordance with established pay scale - $16/hour to start
    WORK SCHEDULE: 25 hours per week – 5 days a week, alternating Fridays/Saturdays
    and at least one Sunday a month

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    The part time Library Assistant assists the Supervising Librarian of Youth Services with various tasks related to teens and tweens, specifically facilitating programs for teens ages 12-18 and tweens ages 9-12, while also assisting with younger youth services programming and all department goals. The part time Library Assistant also serves the public at the Circulation Desk and reports to the Circulation Supervisor during those shifts.
    I ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.     • Provides exemplary customer service
    • Registers borrowers, checks out/checks in library materials, places ILL requests using an integrated library system
    • Collects, records, and counts all monies received at the Circulation Desk
    • Tracks overdue items
    • Answers and directs telephone calls
    • Provides effective directional assistance
    • Serves public at the Children’s desk and the Reference desk upon request
    • Provides reader's advisory and answers general reference questions
    • Assists patrons with first level technology support and troubleshooting
    • Unpacks/packs delivery bins
    • Sorts incoming mail, newspapers, and periodicals
    • Shelves/retrieves items in stack areas beginning at floor level and reaching a height of six feet
    • Assists with copying, general filing, programming, and other duties as assigned
    • Processes new materials;
    • Enters/deletes items from the database;
    • Maintains periodical collection
    • Repairs damaged materials
    • Prepares bulletin boards, displays / story times
    • Assists library administration with data entry for the weekly payroll and accounts payable systems
    • Participates in library marketing, including blog posts, digital signage, and social media postings
    • Coordinates opening and closing of the library building as assigned
    • Contributes to special assignments and other library initiatives as directed
    II MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the position and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties:
    • High School graduate, preferably with two years of college and/or library experience (finalists will be required to provide official educational transcripts)
    • Knowledge of basic cataloging
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, Town officials, and the general public.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Enjoys working with people of all ages, abilities, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity with an aptness to relate successfully with youth, families, and co-workers
    • Must possess/project a welcoming demeanor, positive attitude, patience, and a professional appearance
    • Demonstrates exemplary customer service skills
    • Demonstrates good organizational skills with an attention to detail
    • Self-directed, flexible, motivated and able to prioritize tasks
    • Must possess strong technology skills as applicable in the library environment
    • Must successfully pass a background check

    III PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with some travel to different sites; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evening and weekends and may be required to travel outside Town boundaries to attend meetings.
    • Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting, to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to often walk, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach (above shoulders), climb, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 25 pounds); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate and exchange information.
    • Vision: See in the normal vision range with or without correction.
    • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

    Personal computer and peripheral devices, calculator, copy machine, digital camera, telephone, telephone headset, folder, postage machine, smart TV, e-readers, and tablets.
