Assistant Director, Library

  • Assists the Library Director in planning short and long range goals and objectives, implementing library services, developing budgets, proposing policies, administration of personnel, payroll functions, health and retirement benefits; and helps oversee management of entire library system to ensure excellent customer service through effective staffing, collection development, technology applications, facilities maintenance and improvements, marketing, and workplace safety.

    • Administers personnel functions by updating and keeping employees’ files current and accurate, receiving applications and interviewing with department and managers. Maintains confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and personnel records.
    • Oversees facilities maintenance according to the established policies and procedures of Augusta Richmond County Risk Management Department.
    • Acts as liaison with the City Human Resources Department and serves as the benefits coordinator for the library system.
    • Prepares, reviews, and approves payroll in the absence of the official timekeepers according to the payroll guideline standards and reviews library expenditures prepared by Fiscal Officer, and co-signs checks to vendors in the absence of the library director.
    • Attends Library Board of Trustee Meetings and Friends of the Augusta Library Board meetings in the absence of the Director. Acts as recording secretary for the board of trustees meetings.
    • Directs the efficient, effective operation of the library services for Augusta-Richmond County Public Library System in the absence of the Director.
    • Assists with yearly budget planning and preparations, recordkeeping, audits, submissions of reports, and grants.
    • Works with county government, library boards, friends groups, and other community, school, and institutional groups to develop plans for libraries.
    • Supervises and evaluates the Administration Staff and Custodians at the Headquarters Library.
    • Assists branch managers with planning, organizing, and coordinating strong programs for Richmond County.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education: Masters of Library and Information Science form an ALA-accredited college or university. {Please note: Upon job offer, you will be required to provide proof of education. Be sure to have the appropriate documents readily available.}

    Experience Six (6) years in public libraries to include organizational, administrative, personnel management, accounting, recordkeeping, customer service, and computer skills.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

    • Working knowledge of all aspects of public services in a public library system
    • Working knowledge of current practices in the field of human resources, and related laws and regulations
    • Basic knowledge of office, personnel, and accounting/bookkeeping practices and procedures
    • Ability to perform with minimum of supervision, to work collaboratively in a team environment, and to demonstrate professional standards, good judgment, dependability and timeliness in work environments
    • Working knowledge of print, non-print, digital, online databases, information sources available form a wide variety of sources including publishers, the Internet, and library vendors
    • Ability to relate well to others assisting them in resolving problems and instilling in them a desire to succeed in their work
    • Ability to make decisions, to use good judgment, to organize activities, to handle difficult situations tactfully, to work with others and to handle details and to supervise competently
    • Ability to make presentations, to speak in public and to moderate discussions

    Certification:

    Grade G-5 or higher from the Georgia State Board of Certification for Librarian. Must obtain thirty (30) days after the hire date.

    Licensing: 

    Possession of a of a valid driver's license with good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

    This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation.

    Travel from office to other locations is less than 50%.
