  • The person in this position is responsible for developing and implementing library programs for adults. This position also performs a variety of professional duties in the Information Services department. Reports to the Information Services Manager.

    Provides exceptional customer service to external and internal customers, both within and outside the library, over the phone, or online. Represents the Library in a professional manner at all times.

    Serves on public reference desk as scheduled and maintains high standards of quality and accuracy established for reference service. Assists patrons with public computers, online catalog, databases, and other library resources and equipment. Assists other departmental staff in reference interactions that require more in-depth research, specialized knowledge, referrals to other organizations or agencies, etc.

    Assists the Information Services Manager in establishing and maintaining departmental guidelines for planning and conducting programs, evaluating program implementation and outcomes, and ensuring that standards are met.

    Assists other Information Services staff with program planning and development as needed. Serves as a resource for branch staff and others, providing guidance on program development and evaluation.

    Works with library staff, community partners, and program providers to develop a slate of programs that supports the library’s strategic plan and reflects diverse community needs and interests.

    Collaborates with other library departments to involve their staff in developing and conducting programs on topics or activities for which they have a specialized interest or expertise. Provides assistance and guidance to staff conducting such programs to ensure high standards of quality.

    Shelves books, periodicals and newspapers; reads and straightens shelves; moves furniture and equipment as needed. Assists in maintaining neat and orderly library facilities.

    Assists with other Information Services tasks as needed, such as inter-library loans, book donations, special collections, etc.

    Creates displays, craft kits, and other passive programs.

    Provides input and recommendations to the Information Services Manager, suggests resources and materials, and assists with the development of policies and procedures.

    Reads professional literature and maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in library services. Attends professional conferences, workshops, and meetings as appropriate and participates in professional organizations.

    Displays cultural literacy and maintains familiarity with the interests and needs of a diverse service population.

    Participates in library’s ongoing training program. Provides training and guidance to staff as required.

    Operates a motor vehicle and various types of office and other equipment including but not limited to computer, printer, fax machine, copier/scanner, assistive technology, camera, smart devices, etc.

    Participates in any special projects or activities as assigned. Assists in the South Carolina Room, art gallery, and other library departments as needed.

    Works nights and weekends as required.

    Performs other associated duties as required or assigned. The Florence County Library System may change assigned work location and schedule of any position depending upon the needs of the system.

    Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association, plus at least one year of relevant professional experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

    Must possess or qualify for a Professional Librarian’s Certificate from the South Carolina State Library.

    Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
