  • Overview and Responsibilities

    The Director of Library Services leads, manages, and coordinates library department initiatives Managing day-to-day operations of the college’s library, this position strategically stewards library resources, promotes community building, public engagement, and student success. This position works with academic deans, associate vice presidents/provost, and College faculty, and staff to improve and enhance library and instructional resources and services, supports the teaching and learning of all CVTC students, and serves as the Copyright Officer for the College. Responsibilities include coordinating and directing all activities of the College’s library, developing and administering a comprehensive collection of print, digital, and technology educational materials as well as fostering vibrant virtual and physical spaces in support of learning.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership in the establishment of long and short-range goals and strategic planning for the College library; consult with College administrative teams including vice presidents, deans, faculty, and students to determine library and instructional support needs.
    • Evaluate library programs, services, and products for effectiveness and in accordance with various program-accrediting bodies; recommend appropriate measures for modification or improvement using a variety of feedback and assessment tools.
    • Develop annual budget composed of local, state, federal, and grant-funded sources to meet strategic objectives.
    • Engage and collaborate with library personnel in efficient implementation of library systems and technologies; serve as the library’s automation system administrator (Sierra by Innovative); ensure quality of public, technical, and digital services.
    • Develop collaborative partnerships with College organizations and departments to enhance and improve resources for employees and students.
    • Coordinate information and media literacy programming district-wide for faculty and students to enhance teaching and learning, using embedded librarians and program liaison model.
    • Direct library’s collection development activities: facilitate faculty, staff, and student participation in collection development process including review, bibliography development, and recommendation of purchases across the district to ensure accreditation, usability, and relevancy.
    • Evaluate the holdings of the library with reference to the changing curriculum of the College and make adjustments in future purchases to serve new and expanding programs.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with a variety of vendors, faculty, and students to recommend and provide training for new or potential information resources including library databases, subscription services, and programming.
    • Establish, maintain, and enhance positive relationships with community libraries, consortia, and information services to expand access to information and materials for College clientele; serve as executive board member of MORE Public Library consortium.
    • Maintain current knowledge on trends and developments in the library field through professional organizations and meetings, workshops, literature and/or professional activities.
    • Establishes and maintains appropriate library records and inventory in accordance with the standards of the Higher Learning Commission and individual program accreditation requirements.
    • Serve as College’s chief licensing and copyright officer to ensure copyright compliance.
    • Maintain proficient understanding and relevant currency of licensing and copyright laws and regulations.
    • Provide reference consultations through in-person appointments, e-mail, phone, video chat, and chat to students and faculty of the College.
    • Participate in library assessment through feedback, data analysis, and data visualization.
    • Participate in regional, state, and national library organizations and professional development as assigned.
    • Ability to apply standard library methods in the performance of acquisition, classification, and cataloging, reference and general or special circulation, and other library and academic support services.
    • Knowledge of and ability to work frequently with integrated library system (ILS), discovery services, library databases and College’s enterprise reporting system.
    • Knowledge of computer and library technologies.
    • Ability to develop and interpret policies and objectives to students, faculty employees, and other library clientele.

    • Ability to work with and relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.
    • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously.
    • Ability to keep detailed and accurate records, and the ability to follow standards.
    • Ability to learn, interpret, and apply established policies and library classification systems to provide direct assistance to patrons in-person, by chat, telephone.
    • Excellent oral, reading, and written communication skills.

    Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Library Sciences, Information Science, or related field with a minimum of two years of experience required.
    • ALA accredited Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree or equivalent preferred.
    • Minimum of two years of direct supervisory experience leading employees or department(s) required.
    • Proven experience with information literacy, and library technology services.
    • Experience with library automation systems, Sierra by Innovative preferred.
