Life Underwriting Director directs and oversees the life insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Additionally, Life Underwriting Director typically requires Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification or Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation. Typically reports to top management. Position Purpose Under minimal oversight, support the administration of the company’s underwriting structure for a book of admitted construction lines. Assist in developing and executing marketing plans. Perform and monitor the books risk analysis. Leads the underwriting staff to analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new submissions. Has significant ownership and accountability over the review of complex sources of profit and selecting appropriate risks. Principal Duties & Responsibilities Assist in developing and implementing strategies for underwriting, risk assessment, and risk management specific to construction insurance Leads and mentors underwriting staff to analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new or renewal submissions Build and maintaining relationships with clients, brokers, and other stakeholders in the construction insurance industry Review submissions, account losses, pricing models, and profitable premiums. Review complex sources of profit by selecting appropriate risks. Support the divisions AVP with special projects or other duties as needed Works with AVP and VP to address deficiencies and improvements of the product ranging from marketing, distribution, appetite, processes, documentation, coverage, and pricing methodologies Work with multiple internal departments, such as claims, actuarial, and IT to develop and maintain a marketable and profitable offering to the construction insurance market Staying informed about industry trends, market conditions, and competitor activities to make informed decisions about insurance products and services. Education & Experience Typically requires a bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business or a related field, advanced degree preferred Professional certifications, such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) is preferred Minimum of 8 years property/casualty underwriting experience preferably in the construction market segment [OR] equivalent level of education and experience Knowledge, Skills, & Competencies Leadership, management and mentorship ability Anticipates and provides solutions to the most complex clients and accounts Proven track record (either at RLI or externally) to manage a large, profitable book of business without oversight or supervision of work Expected to manage day to day tasks regarding growth and profitability of the product Consistent display of complete/organized files at audits and documentation is at a level that judgement/pricing is easily understood by anyone’s review Responsible for results of individual book of business Personal & Professional Growth RLI encourages its employees to pursue professional development work in insurance and job-related areas.
