Position Description

Job Summary

The Underwriting Manager will create and maintain a highly efficient and productive environment/culture that values its team members and recognizes performance.  Ensure effective communication with staff, management and our partner branches.  Manage the mortgage underwriting pipeline being cognizant of service levels, quality, compliance and branch expectations.  Plan, coordinate, directs, reviews and supervises work of subordinates in the underwriting of conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo, Non-QM and portfolio lending products.  Ensures that loan conditions submitted to obtain clear-to-close are reviewed within published SLA.  Provide guidance, training, coaching and assistance to Underwriting staff as needed.  Responsible for recruiting, hiring, employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, salary adjustments and termination functions.  The Underwriting Manager also ensures its team stays abreast of all Underwriting overlays and follows all applicable regulations and company policies, procedures, and protocol.

Responsibilities

• Assist in monthly new hire Underwriting training, as required
• Provide additional new hire training after 15th day, review Candor Underwriting and Pre-underwriting
• Provide additional new hire training after 30th day, review Report Card Findings, Post Closing Stips, and Insuring Stips
• Monitor pipeline to ensure turn times are met
• Counsel staff on Underwriting matters as needed
• Review Aged 30 Day/Problem Loan Queue as needed to assist with difficult loans in Post Closing
• Review aged insuring loans as needed to resolve issues
• Resolve escalations submitted to the escalation queue
• Review 2nd sign queue and perform various file reviews and 2nd signs as needed
• Review Report Card Finding pipeline view to ensure Underwriters are addressing errors and Underwriter disputes are addressed by Underwriting Manager (UW Manager to meet with the Underwriter to review when they disagree with their position)
• Monitor the Reg B pipeline view to ensure loans are decisioned in a timely manner
• Monitor various UW Lead pipeline views
• Participate in various meetings (procedure changes, new programs, etc.)
• Provide suggestions or prepare procedure notes for various Underwriting tasks
• Provide suggestions for new rules for the LOS to streamline processes or mitigate errors
• Provide suggestions to the Credit Risk team for changes to the Underwriting Manual as needed
• Underwrite Employee Loans
• Carry out other tasks as assigned
   

Qualifications

• 2 years of Managerial experience in the Mortgage industry
• 5 years of direct Underwriting experience
• DE/LAPP/SARR certifications preferred
• Ability to work and manage in a fast paced, high demand environment
• Ability to learn and follow company policies, procedures, and Underwriting protocol
• Ability to embrace technology and utilize a task-based workflow
• Excellent customer service and written/oral communication skills
• Excellent work ethic

Supervisory Responsibilities, If Any:

• Manage a team of 5 or more Underwriters
