Life Underwriting Manager manages the daily operations of life underwriting department for a variety of products to contribute to the achievement of financial objectives of the business.     The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; sustainable agriculture and food systems, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.


    Department:

    In the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Department of Entomology is located on both the Ithaca and Geneva campus. Their mission is threefold: To pursue studies to understand basic and applied aspects of insect biology; to provide a robust and modern curriculum as part of preeminent undergraduate and graduate programs; and to inform and educate the public about the issues related to insects and other arthropods. The Department of Entomology has 27 faculty and senior academics in Ithaca and 7 within the Geneva campus. Their overall budget is approximately $12.5 M for Grants and Contracts & Federal Appropriations: $11.1 M in Endowments; and $3.6 M in general and restricted gifts.

    Position Summary
    :

    • Serve as administrative operations advisor to the department chair.
    • Collaborate with the Chair and Senior Administrative Manager (SAM) on development and implementation of management strategies for short- & long-range fiscal, operational, and human resource challenges.
    • Function as chief financial officer of unit, establishing and monitoring annual budget, developing financial projections and strategies, and managing grant and gift proposals and awards.
    • Work very closely with department faculty, provide ad-hoc reports and analysis and guidance on issues related to their grants, personnel, student (grad and undergrad), IT and facility needs. Work in partnership with CALS Business Service Center and Information Technology Service Area to ensure that operations are structured to meet departmental needs.
    • Work in partnership with the CALS Human Resource Office on all HR issues related to academic, non-academic and student employees.
    • Advise and assist Chair and department supervisors on staffing and human resources issues. Supervise administrative support staff and manage overall support staff structure.
    • Collaborate with Chair and SAM to establish and implement departmental operational policies and procedures.
    • Oversee facilities operations, annual inventory requirements and safety compliance issues.
    • Serve as primary liaison to college and university financial, administrative, and human resource management units.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or other formal four-year training program in business administration, organizational development, human relations, or related field; 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination.
    • Strong working knowledge of Cornell contract and/or endowed budgeting and accounting policies and practices; grant and contract management; personnel policies and procedures; and conflict management and contract negotiating required.
    • Must have excellent supervisory and leadership skills.
    • Must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Customer service skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate with a broad range of people is essential.
    • Attention to detail and organizational skills are critical.
    • Able to work quickly, effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices. Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.
    • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
    • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
    • Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing practices to business goals.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master's degree or other formal post-graduate training program in business administration, organizational development, human relations, or related field preferred.
    • Proficiency in use of Cornell administrative computer systems or equivalents such as COLTS (Time and Labor Reporting), APPS (Purchasing), EDL (Human Resource Information System), ADW (Time and Labor Reporting), APPS (Purchasing), ADW BRIO (General Ledger Accounting and Reporting), CPBS (Budgeting System), AND PAR IRIS(Gift Tracking System) highly desirable.
