Performs site preparation tasks, including digging holes or trenches, installing anchors, climbing poles, and using equipment like digger derricks, aerial lifts, pulling and tensioning equipment, forklifts, and dump trucks. Being a Lineman installs wire and cable. Follows all safety regulations and procedures. Additionally, Lineman work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a valid Driver's License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Lineman works under moderate supervision. Journeyman Lineman

  • The City of Geneva Electric Utility, a division of the City of Geneva Public Works Department, is seeking a qualified journeyman lineman to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and inspection of the City’s electric (12-34kV) utility system.

    Primary job responsibilities

    Including but not limited to:

    • Operation and maintenance of substation and generation equipment,
    • Construction and maintenance of City overhead and underground distribution systems
    • Fiber optic splicing
    • Rotating on-call responsibilities
    • Safely and efficiently install, maintain, and repair components of the electric utility system; isolate and correct electrical system faults, breaks and cuts; work safely with high voltage overhead and underground power cables, transformers and related electric utility facilities and equipment.
    • Operate various equipment including a backhoe, bucket/boom truck, etc.
    • Maintain and care for assigned tools and equipment.
    • Read, understand, and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
    • Deal tactfully, and professionally with supervisors, contractors, engineers, and property owners.
    • Communicate effectively; and be able to use a computer to enter, extract and query data.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must have obtained a journey-level certification from a recognized apprenticeship program and have knowledge of methods and procedures required in the maintenance/construction of electric utility systems, including:

    • proper use of tools and equipment;
    • related hazards and safety precautions;
    • applicable codes and standards governing construction/maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution systems.

    The successful candidate will have experience or expertise in any of the following;

    • metering installation and maintenance
    • substation maintenance, generation operation and maintenance
    • fiber optic systems

    Physical requirements include the ability to perform moderately demanding physical work, such as:

    • Lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
    • Push/pull supply carts or equipment, deal with hazardous materials.
    • Work in uncomfortable areas due to dirt, drafts, fumes, noise, lighting, or temperature variation.
    • Must be able to perform duties requiring extreme precaution to avoid injury, and to raise, climb and work without the fear of heights.
    • Must be capable of distinguishing primary colors.

    Applicants must have or be able to obtain a State of Illinois Class A CDL driver’s license within one year of being hired. The City of Geneva requires residency within 16 miles of the city limits within one year of hire.

    Salary and Benefits

    The rate of pay for this position is $59.7054 per the current CBA between the City of Geneva and IBEW Local 196.
