    Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Repairs, overhauls, modifies, tests, programs, maintains, and installs a variety of locking devices found on doors, office furniture, compartments, mobile equipment, vaults, safes, and other secured locations.
    • Work includes the manufacture and duplication of keys and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms, both mechanical and electronic operation.
    • Ensures proper authorization of access for key assignment and issuing.
    • Installs devices with features such as dual locking capabilities, mechanical and electronic interaction with timing mechanisms, combination locks or actuating mechanisms.
    • Sets up coding systems involving varying types of locks and keyways and uses software systems management and technical manuals to ensure that various keyways are compatible.
    • Repairs a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices.
    • Interprets technical manuals and specifications when testing and repairing locking mechanisms and manipulates combination locks and picks key locks.
    • Troubleshoots locking mechanisms that interrelate with equipment such as monitors, alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors, and other equipment in complete security or surveillance systems.
    • Installs, repairs, overhauls, fabricates, tunes, aligns modifies, calibrates and tests electronic or electronic systems and equipment related to locking mechanisms.
    • Fabricates, overhauls, modifies, installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains ground lock system electronic equipment.
    • Receives work assignments from supervisor; develops drawings and/or diagrams which identify necessary dimensions and special parts or surfaces to be used in manufacture and installation procedures.
    • Determines work sequences and selection and use of tools and techniques to be applied.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work at this level seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 50 pounds. The locksmith workers frequently stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and work in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site.

    Work is normally done inside in areas that are well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Occasionally work is done outside in bad weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolds, and in other elevated areas where falling may be a hazard. The position may be subject to cuts, bruises and burns when using power tools and equipment. Work may be outdoors in inclement weather, subject to noise, dust and fumes related to this trade.


    Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).
