    Position Summary:
    The Locksmith/Maintenance Worker II is expected to install, repair and maintain locks and related hardware; cut keys as well as perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building repair and construction tasks.


    Typical Schedule:
    Expected work schedule for all employees is Monday through Friday. This is a non-exempt position and the expected work schedule is Monday through Friday 7am – 3:30pm.  As a non-exempt employee the schedule may vary based on the number of hours needed to meet the job responsibilities. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening and weekends to meet the needs of the department and the University. Any overtime hours must be pre-approved by the Director.

    As essential personnel, hours during inclement weather may change and/or the employee will be required to work overtime. Essential personnel must report to the University during severe weather and other emergencies, unless directed otherwise.

    Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions of the Position:
    • Maintain and repair all locks and keying systems.
    • Develop and maintain a key inventory system by door, lock, pinning and building.
    • Develop and maintain a computer data base to support the key inventory system.
    • Develop and maintain floor plans identifying the doors and related hardware of the campus buildings.
    • Organize all keys currently used on the University campus for identification.
    • Produce and maintain various keying systems to be used by the University on a rotation basis to help maintain the security level on campus.
    • Produce and issue keys through Department Heads as approved by the Maintenance & Grounds Manager and the Director of Facilities.
    • Install, adjust, repair and maintain all locks, panic hardware, door closers and other related hardware.
    • Maintain knowledge of all types of locking mechanisms in the industry and new industry trends.
    • Have knowledge of locks on file cabinets, desks, safes, card access and master keying.
    • Be able to cut all types of keys by duplication and by codes and by able to find the needed codes to cut keys.
    • Maintain an accurate inventory of keys, key blanks and other related locksmith supplies and equipment and purchase supplies through a Locksmith distributor as needed.
    • Be responsible for the inspection of buildings and grounds for needed repair, preventative maintenance, adjustment and/or replacement parts as required to maintain the buildings and grounds and to generate work orders for repairs as needed.
    • Receive and perform necessary work as instructed through verbal communication or by work orders assigned by the Maintenance and Grounds Manager and the Director of Facilities.
    • Assist in winter maintenance of campus walkways, entrances and stairs by using shovels, snow blowers and ice control products.
    • Pick up litter around campus and empty trash containers as assigned by the Maintenance and Grounds Manager and the Director of Facilities.
    • Assist the other maintenance trades staff as assigned by the Maintenance and Grounds Manager and the Director of Facilities.
    • Receive, perform and complete work orders pertaining to a variety of routine building maintenance and repair tasks to include: repairing flooring, toilet hardware, faucets, sheetrock walls, appliances, painting, carpentry, window replacement, lighting repairs, heating and hot water equipment, routine plumbing and electrical repairs and all other tasks as assigned by the Maintenance and Grounds Manager and the Director of Facilities.
    • Maintain and operate tools, equipment and vehicles utilized to complete the assigned tasks.
    • Other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Facilities.

    Position Requirements/Skills/Abilities:
    High school education with relevant vocational training, plus three to five years relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.  Excellent technical skills as a locksmith as well as strong skills in the building trades including carpentry, basic plumbing and electrical. Strong familiarity with all tools associated with the locksmith trade and as well as a variety of hand and power tools. Valid driver’s license required and certification as a locksmith preferred. Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English, as well as perform basic mathematical computations. Must successfully complete criminal background check. Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently. Ability to participate in a rotating on-call program with the use of a pager or cell phone. Ability to respond to the University to perform different tasks at various hours of the day and night.
