Locksmith is responsible for the maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of locks and keys. Duplicates keys and replaces and re-keys locks as necessary. Being a Locksmith may install or maintain emergency exit systems and electronic access equipment and devices. May design new key or lock systems for an organization. Additionally, Locksmith maintains a thorough records of changes and additions to an organization's key systems. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Locksmith works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     Locksmith positions install, service, maintain and rebuild locking equipment; repair and change combinations on safe locking mechanisms; maintain an electro-mechanical access control system; cut and make impressions of keys; assemble lock cylinders; pick locks; extract broken keys; maintain master key systems; install and repair panic and fire exit hardware; install mortise cases and door closers; maintain computerized and manual records; and perform other duties as assigned.

          NOTES:
    • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

      4% effective 7/1/24 

      2% effective 1/1/25 

      5% effective 7/1/25  

    • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
    You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
     
    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  You must meet ONE of the following options:
    1. Successful completion of a state-accredited three-year Locksmith Apprenticeship Program.
    2. Three years of full-time journey-level experience in the repair, maintenance and installation of locks, keys and related building hardware.
          NOTE:
    • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

    LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

    HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

    • Possession of a Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL), Certified
      Professional Locksmith (CPL) or Certified Master Locksmith (CML) certification.
    • Knowledge of building codes and Title 24/fire codes/ADA codes.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Access).
    REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (MUST SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION):
    • Proof of apprenticeship completion, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
    • For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
