Systems Engineer

  • Position Information

    The Information Technology Department is looking for someone with demonstrated expertise to join our team as Systems Engineer. Prior applicants are not required to reapply.

    This role assists in analyzing, planning, and implementing complex infrastructure projects. Provides technical and operational support for user management, IT server systems, and data center infrastructure, including Windows AD, MS Office 365, Windows Server infrastructure, Server Virtualization (VMWare & MS), On-premises HCI systems/SAN (DellEMC VxRail & NetApp), and Cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure). Ensures systems and its services are available to all County users 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Provides critical services to the citizens such as Fire Services, Law Enforcement, and 911 Dispatch that are heavily dependent upon the network and these functions would be severely degraded if the network was not available.
    Essential Duties Include:
    • Demonstrates a high degree of efficiency and competence in server and infrastructure systems management and administration including effective use of Power Scripting.
    • Manages and analyses enterprise server/systems including installation, performance tuning, maintenance, and security.
    • May be responsible for certain key components of mission critical enterprise systems and infrastructure.
    • Manages security access to assigned systems, related records, and documents and maintains strict confidentiality.
    • Plans and upgrades server and other infrastructure systems.
    • Researches and evaluates server/data center related systems and tools.
    • Develops and maintains backup procedures and monitors systems performance and capacity and tracks performance trends.
    • Provisions and maintains servers.
    • Plans and conducts regular tests of disaster recovery plan with the infrastructure team.
    • Evaluates and recommends systems/infrastructure related solutions.
    • Schedules and performs software installations and upgrades.
    • Prepares and maintains technical documentations.
    • Strong familiarity with related networking and cybersecurity technologies and concepts.
    • Working knowledge of enterprise server virtualization technology -VMWare preferred.
    • May specialize in specific systems such SCCM, Office 365 platform, AWS/Azure, SAN, etc.
    • Works with Business Applications, vendors, consultants, contractors, and IT personnel.
    • Provides technical guidance and assistance to other system engineers and/or IT staff.

    Hours:
    8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, and after hours and On-call as needed.

    Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.

    Salary Information:
    The hiring range for this position is
    $71,920.00 - $97,091.50. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

    Sign On Bonus: Candidates accepting regular benefits eligible employment into this position are eligible to receive a one-time sign on bonus of $2,000 with half being paid upon starting in the position and verification of full vaccination status and half being paid upon successful completion of one's introductory period. Current NHC employees hired to fill one of these positions will receive half of the sign on bonus amount ($1,000) upon starting in the position and the second installment of $1,000 will be paid following 180 days of successful employment in the position. In the event the employee voluntarily resigns from the position before one year of service in it, the employee shall repay the sign on bonus amount on a prorated basis, depending on the length of full time service in the position prior to resignation.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field and two (2) years of experience in designing and maintaining infrastructure; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
    Knowledge of:
    • Knowledge of complex virtualization environments (VMWare specifically) and Storage arrays (Dell VXRail or others), Windows Servers, Active Directory Domains, Microsoft Azure/AWS. Infrastructure planning and upgrades for current and future growth.
    • Skilled in troubleshooting hardware and software problems; implementing and maintaining computer data backup systems; detecting and reporting system failures; prioritizing work and projects; evaluating new hardware and software, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

    Licenses/Certifications

    • Valid Driver's License and good driving record required at time of application.
    • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
    • Preferred Certifications: VMWare Certifications, Microsoft Server, MS Office 365, or Azure/AWS certifications are preferred.
