Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.   • Job purpose:

    The Machinist 2 will plan and execute assignments using machine tools ranging from lathes to milling machines and CNC machines to enhance the productivity of our organization.  This will include quality checks and monitoring machine output for the manufacturing of equipment, parts and structures in the forest products industry. 

     

    Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

    • Operates and maintains drill press, lathe and milling machines.
    • Reviews drawings, instructions, blueprints, manuals and schematics to ensure accurate production.
    • Complete calculations quickly, such as dimensions and tolerances of materials.
    • Perform proper set-up and calibration procedures for all equipment and accessories to be used on projects.
    • Takes precise measurements for cutting or shaping.
    • Plans proper sequence of tasks to complete the assignment.
    • Monitors production, adjusting feed and other settings as necessary.
    • Works with costly metals where possibility of damage or spoilage is high.
    • Maintains a safe operation of equipment by adhering to safety protocols and regulations.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

    • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
    • Machine Tool certification/diploma preferred.
    • Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive tasks.

    • Excellent coordination and mechanical skills.
    • Excellent manual dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail, and safety.
