Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. GENERAL SUMMARY
Performs the following duties, and other required activities as assigned. Must demonstrate competencies necessary to meet business requirements. May perform as a member or leader of a functional and/or cross-functional team.
Previous experience setting up and operating various Manual and/or CNC machine tools, including vertical and horizontal mills, lathes, drill presses, band saws, grinders, presses and other shop equipment with minimal guidance or training. Assemble and/or repair various parts, mechanisms, tools, mechanical assembles, sub-assemblies or machines, applying knowledge of machining practices, mechanics, shop mathematics and metal properties. Interpret required documentation such as blueprints, sketches, specifications, CNC programs, detailed routings and capable of following detailed instructions either written or oral. Verifies conformance of work piece to specifications by inspecting dimensions and requirements using calibrated measuring instruments. Must be capable of holding close tolerances and fine micro finishes and must consistently produce parts within the established quality and cost parameters.
Must possess knowledge in the machinability of ferrous and non-ferrous materials as well as plastics, fiber and rubber materials and have a good working knowledge of various types of cutting tool including the ability to determine the correct speeds and feeds.
