Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     The Generation Operations & Engineering Business Unit is hiring a Machinist Specialist to support Mechanical operations at the Skagit Hydroelectric Project Hydroelectric Project located in Newhalem, Washington 125 miles northeast of Seattle.   This position will report to the Hydro Maintenance Machinist Crew Chief.Job Responsibilities - Here is more about what you’ll be doing:  
     
    • Assists journey-level personnel in the disassembly and reassembly of powerhouse equipment, facilities, generators, and performs substation maintenance and repair activities.
    • Organizes, cleans, and assembles required materials, supplies, tools, or equipment for project activities.
    • Drills, threads, taps, or punches holes to prepare materials and parts; operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools.
    • Bends, cuts, spot welds, sandblasts, grinds, rolls, or heat treats materials.
    • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
    • Rigs equipment for moving large or heavy loads.
    • Cleans shop and work areas.
    • Cleans, oils, and inspects equipment to ensure proper operation and functioning.
    • Picks up and delivers materials, supplies, parts, or equipment from vendors and suppliers.
    •  Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Requires a minimum of two years experience in machine shop or other metal trades (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
     
    Work Environment/Physical Demands
    • Requires physical exertion.
    • Exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
    • Works around high voltages in power houses, switch yards and transformers.
    • Works in confined spaces.
    • Works at heights on ladders, platforms, or staging.
    • Works with machines, materials, or in or around hazardous areas, requiring safety equipment, protective devices, and other precautions.
    • Works in noisy environments,
    • Works on or above water
    • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
    License, Certification and Other Requirements
    • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. This position will require the occasional driving of city vehicles.
    • Successful completion of license in waste water and blaster operations depending upon assignments.
    Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:  
    • Completion of a formal machinist training program
    • Experience working with a utility
    • Experience fabricating parts using diagrams and templates for specific purposes
    • Willingness to learn new skills

    The full salary range for this position is $34.20 to $37.15 per hour.
