Role Overview
The CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up and utilizing CNC programs for new or existing parts. They troubleshoot both new and existing issues with programs and work with programming to resolve these. They set up cutting tools and enter offsets into the CNC program. Additionally, they may train operators on production parts as well as standard shop practices. This position is assigned to the Western Design & Fabrication Company, a member of the Western Shelter Family of Companies, located in Springfield, Oregon and will report to the Production Manager.
Responsibilities
- Operate Machines in accordance with current process router and work instructions
- Use dimensional measuring tools including Micrometer, Calipers, Pin Gages and Bore Gages.
- Verify part conformance per work instructions and records required dimensions on record sheet
- Maintain schedule and perform critical work assignments
- Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
- Plans stock inventory by checking stock to determine amount available; anticipating needed stock; placing and expediting requests for stock; verifying receipt of stock.
- Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
- Set up recurring production parts on 3 and 4 axis machine centers
- Monitors and adjusts cutting tools. Replaces worn tools and sets/resets tool offsets
- Sets up and proves out new or existing CNC programs 3, 4 and 5 axis machine centers
- Review new programs prior to start in CAD program system or CAD program verification system
- Works directly with programming department to resolve program issues
- Trains employees on advanced machining skills
- Uses various machines and hand tools to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Maintains logs, records, and reports concerning production, machine maintenance, and product inconsistencies.
- Periodically checks products per company policy to ensure quality and uniform completion; resolves any identified problems and alerts supervisor.
- Complete all tasks and assignments in a timely manner
- Maintain sufficient output to keep pace with production
- Flex from task to task as production needs dictate
- Assist in improving work instructions and processes
- Safe operation of a variety of tools including hand tools, drills, power saws, grinders, sanders, tape measures, utility knife, etc.
- Understand and observe all safety procedures and practices to prevent injury to self or co-workers; attend periodic safety meetings as required; recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
- Interact with coworkers in a positive and encouraging manner
- Supports 6S/workplace organization goals of the department and offers suggestions and makes improvements that assist in achieving the departments performance board metrics.
- Keep workplace clean, tidy and in good condition.
- Return all tools and equipment to their designated spot after each use.
- Maintains equipment and performs basic repairs when needed.
- Regularly inspect, clean equipment, notify supervisor and/or facilities maintenance immediately of machines or equipment needing repair or maintenance, and take any damaged or worn tools out of service.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift/ move up to 40 pounds of material without assistance.

- Visual acuity to read instructions, operate machines, and inspect parts produced
Qualifications
- 5 years machining experience.
- Previous set-up and prove out experience
- Advanced knowledge of G and M codes for CNC machines
- Ability to review part program in CAD system and or CAD program verification system
- Advanced ability in shop math skills such as Trigonometry, Metal removal calculations, Surface Speed calculations, ect.
