  • Job Description
    The Director, Safety Services and Mail Center is an administrative position reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations & Planning. The Director is responsible for the overall management of the University’s Safety Services program and Mail Center operation. This includes the delivery of safety services to the students, faculty and staff.
    Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities – Safety Services:
    • Manage the operation of the Safety Services department. Supervise a staff of officers, office personnel and student workers.
    • Set goals and achieve objectives appropriately for a quality campus safety program.
    • Manage departmental budget.
    • Coordinate duty and on-call schedules.
    • Maintain a log of calls and incidents on campus.
    • Develop and supervise the university parking program.
    • Meet regularly with the Vice President for Operations and Planning
    • Establish necessary safety programs in conjunction with the universities Compliance Committee, Residence Life department, Facilities Management & Planning, etc.
    • Manage the university’s surveillance camera network and archives.
    • Provide assistance and support for special campus events such as: athletic events, homecoming, summer conferences, etc.
    • Serve on AU’s Compliance Committee.
    • Establish rapport with local law enforcement and fire department agencies.
    • Attend Ohio Campus Safety Officers meeting and other professional meetings/conferences/trainings as necessary.
    • Maintain compliance with applicable governmental regulations, including annual Clery Act reporting.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Operations and Planning.


    Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities – Mail Center:
    • Manage the operation of the Mail Center department. Supervise the full-time and student workers.
    • Manage the departmental budgets for the Mail Center while maintaining budgetary awareness in processing mail and minimize postage/shipping costs whenever possible.
    • If necessary, assist in daily operating (processing/sorting/delivery) of incoming and outgoing mail.
    • Be knowledgeable of postage account numbers.
    • Learn and maintain competency of mail/parcel processing software.
    • Must be able to maintain an effective working knowledge of postal and courier regulations.

    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning required
    • At least three (3) years of related security or law enforcement experience
    • Successfully satisfy all standard prescribed pre-employment screening
    • Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license
    • Must carry private auto insurance
    • Must have (or be willing to acquire) certification in emergency medical assistance (American Red Cross)
    • Must be able to function effectively in stressful situations (i.e. situations involving conflict, medical emergencies, fire alarms, crowd control, etc.)
    • Be able to operate departmental vehicles or equipment in a safe manner
    • Must be an effective communicator (written and verbal)
    • Must be able to effectively handle several tasks at once
    • Be able to use departmental radios, phones and possess basic computer skills
    • Must be thorough with attention to detail, particularly in documenting incidents, conducting investigations, and creating reports

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in higher education.
    • Prior supervisory experience with an emphasis in hourly staff
    • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certified
    • Working knowledge of required compliance documents for higher education related to annual reports

    Physical Demands
    • Able to work in extreme weather conditions
    • Administer emergency medical assistance (as certified)
    • Must be able to work in a noisy office environment and monitor scanners and radio traffic
    • Must be able to climb at least 10 floors of stairs and still effectively carry out response duties (i.e. medical, fire calls, disturbance, routine service, etc.
    • Must be able to patrol campus on foot
